Talk of big bills and winter jobs on Andymadmak's thread 'doing the right thing?' made me think about how much we spend on our wedges.

So, how much have you spent since buying your wedge?

Mine adds up to about £22k in 4.5 years, which breaks down as:-

£11000 - purchase
£700 - service / mot
£2000 - top end rebuild + new clutch
£8000 - Restoration
£600 - Tyres

Rich.

I simply dare not add it up,

I've had it 5 years now, and it cost me £14k including warranty) . In that time i've:

Done 26k miles with all the servicing, tyres and what nots that that requires

replaced clutch

rebuilt rear end - diff, driveshafts, bearings etc(twice)

new suspension bushes all round

rebuilt front end, including ball joints etc

rebuilt manifolds

new ECU

New headlamp electrics

New wiper motor

chassis treatment

New radiators

New Magnecore plug leads

2 X Batteries

Wooden steering wheel

Kick plates

Other alloy bits ( gear knob etc)

too many front main beam lights (bloody stones!)

Having said all that, it's never broken down or failed to start!

I have every bill in a big book, and most of the history for the car since new. (it cost £28.5K in 1991 ) One day I'll get a calculator out, but not today !

Made the mistake of totaling it all up a few months ago - turned out to be twice what I had thought although I rest happy in the knowledge that in 3 years of ownership I have only spent in total what the previous guy paid for it, 2 years before I bought it - confused?

£300 1800 miles the only faults being squeaky fanbelt, a slight zorst blow and a bottom balljoint. Bliss but I want a SEAC!

£1547... though I've just realised that excludes the rip-off clutch master cylinder* so add say another £103 to that... £1650 in 3 years/ 11000 miles.
That includes a major engine rebuild, rewire of the injection system, a full set of tyres and all MOTs. Oh , and the chassis sill repairs.
Factor in what I've spent in man-hours, though, and I bet it exceeds the as-new price of £21K in 1987.
The previous owner spent £8K in 2.5 years, and the guy before him a whopping £18K in 5 years... I have all the receipts.
As I've said before, though: where the hell does it go? My car ought to look like £50 grand, but it doesn't....

*Just goes to show you should always ring the dealers - I bought mine direct from Girling: they told me it was a deleted part and charged accordingly. Then I found out that TVR dealers still had some at the usual £60...doh!!

6,500 to buy, 4,600 in bills. In eight months. Ouch.

But it was also 12,000 miles in those 8 months!

Edited to say:

Every penny accounted for here:

Am I in the Wedge chat? I can't believe you lot have poured so much into your cars. I have had mine about 15 months and it's cost me about £500 in maintenance, including a 48K service. Can anyone help me aspire to national debt size bills?

I'm with you Lee. A few front suspension bushes, and a recored radiator is about it, except for an ongoing problem with the fuelling - maybe that will bankrupt me eventually! I've had mine about 18 months and covered 8000 miles, without a failure. I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mode of ownership, except for routine maintenance. However, I am sure mine wouldn't hold a candle to some of the others I've seen on PH. Keep up the good work guys!! I'll buy you a beer if you've spent all your hard earned cash on your Wedges.

As long as you spell it 'Jon' then I'll scare you!

Anyway, over 7 years it is approx £40k (before anyone asks, no that does not include the purchase cost but does include some of the costs paid for under warranty). A decent proportion of that is the recent work undertaken. Further details are in 'My Cars'

Yup - wouldn't you? I'm feeling depressed about the amount this work has cost me but at least all the nice things you guys have said about the finished article makes me happier!

£20K, £25K, is that all! A couple of years ago I made the mistake of adding up my running costs for the V8S (see my profile). Never again!
