Has this conversion been done, are there any companies specialising in this conversion?

Why would you want to do that?

2.0 zetec black top with 40's and a nice exhaust should see 160bhp and a head job up to 225bhp.
How do I acheive this with a 1.6 MX5 engine?

Super/turbo charger is the simple route.
IRTB + standalone ecu properly tuned with a raised rev limit looks & sounds great and can also get 160-170bhp if it's done properly. It's been done before. You'll probably find details on Nutz somewhere.

I had heard BB was up for sale. Jay will be heartbroken when someone drives it away. £6k is a bargain for what has to be the best Mk1 if not the best MX5 in the country.

The reason I'd posted Urns old for sale thread was just to point out that 170bhp was possible on an na tuned 1.6 MX5.

I'd love a Zetec MX-5 - I had a 2L Zetec in my kit-car and it produced loads of power and sounded absolutely amazing on 45s with an un-baffled exhaust.

Having rebuilt my 1.6 motor though I can't really see enough difference between the two (apart from capacity) to make it a worthwhile swap - I suppose the MX5 motor would run nicely on 40s or 45s also - they seem to be becoming more popular for Seven-type kit cars and they mostly use throttle bodies or carbs.

What kind of head work gains 65bhp ???

Thats more than many FI kits.

I'm calling BS on headwork alone.

I had a full race NA 2.4 Cosworth engine that reved to 9500 that made 270bhp but cost over £10k including a forged crank.

However a well set up MX5 turbo kit will definately make 220 and without being peaky and low torque.

Sorry, went back and read another post, not 225 but about 200bhp with head work, this is achieved with new cams port n polish and adjustable cam wheels.

My Zetec is 160bhp out of the box with a 4-1 exhaust system on 40s.

And do you understand how that works ?

IE 200bhp NA will not see where 200bhp FI went.

NO explain
What is FI, is it forced induction?

Yes, it's forced induction.

Basically, if you na tune an engine you are playing with the shape of the torque & power curves. You can tune it to give more top end power but it will be at the expense of low & mid-range power. The higher the top end the lower the mid range. Also, torque is a calculated value from horse power (or is it the other way around?) so as you increase bhp you decrease torque.

What this means is that, in a straight-line thrash through the gears 200bhp na and 200bhp fi should be pretty much the same but in a real-world race or even just fast driving on the road where you aren't constantly full-throttle and thrashing the fi car will have bags more torque and will easily drive away from the na car.

Horsepower = torque x revs.

Honda VTEC engines generate a high horsepower figure because they rev up to 8000 rpm, but they don't actually have that much torque....

Turbo kit and get about 100lbs more torque than any ford lump.

^^^ What the man said. Don't go messing about with Ford lumps. There is a minefield of info on FI MX5's on the net to turn to.

Yes.

Best way is to overlay dynos of an NA and FI cars.

The area under the curves tells you how powerful it is the FI car could well have almost double.

Look on FM site there is a dyno section showing an FM2 V S2000.
