Hi Guys,

I'm after a new coil and have been told by a few independants to go for the Lucas as it's half the price of the Bosch and they haven't experienced any problems using them. The only problems is i need a part n. to get one on order. Has anyboby used one and know the part no.?

Thanks Lee

Nope.

But I've been told the opposite by respected tuners such as Mark Adams. If you search back a few days the part number for the Bosch coil is on this section of the Gassing Station.

I only paid £45 or so for my Bosch coil. I think I paid £20 for a lucas one from www.tvrgear.com not long after getting the car - it had gine within 3 years. Will the Bosch item last longer than 3 years? Who knows, but the Lucas one certainly didnt.

Coil part-on list I have been trying to do at www.tvrcc-south-wales.co.uk/chimaeraparts.asp under engine section has two references to coil part numbers not too sure which one is correct.

latest posting with Bosch part No was at www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=61198&f=8&h=0&hw=coil+part

If you do establish if either one is correct could you let me know, suggest the old coil is taken with you when you go and get one.

Do not bother with the Lucas one. Even Land Rover do not use them anymore. Get the Bosch one.

The coil i've looked at mentioned not to use it with a system that has a contact breaker - don't all systems have contact breakers?

The main reason i was looking at the lucas is mainly because the closest place had one in stock and i'll be upgrading the car next year anyway so there didn't seem much point in searching for a bosch unit at twice the price.

Thanks for all the replies guys

The system is electronic with no contact breakers at all. It uses a special sensor to trigger the spark and a special ignition amplifier/controller to feed the coil. See bible for a full description. The system is pretty good but the heat and electrical stress on the coil kills the Lucas ones pretty quickly. Tend to burst the seals and then leak oil and then slowly die a painful death. You will still get a spark but not a good one or the car starts to go intermittent...
