I have finally decided what I want for my first and probably only tattoo. However placement is a real issue. I know where I want to place it but understand it is a very painful area. I only really want the one so I am bit stuck beacuse what happens if I can't take it? I end up with a quarter tattoo or something?

I'd go for a 'yes' in answer to that

Where?
Regardless of that, the answer will be "Man up" wink

I've got a big piece on my ribs, going from hip to armpit. If it's Ribs I can offer some words of encouragement.

yeah it's ribs and I don't carry much fat there - pretty bony. Slightly missing in the balls department though. Is it better on a less bony more well covered area?

Both ribs/ sides done here too. Yes it hurts. A lot.

I had the same questions - how do I know how much it will hurt, and will I cope?

Easy answer is - how much do you want it and how little do you want an unfinished tattoo?!

The pain is temporary, painful but very doable.

I vowed to never have the other side done after the last session on my right side. Within a week I'd signed up for the other side to be done.

Thought it would be, I was lying about the words of encouragement - sorry.
It hurts like a bh, I've always found bits over bone hurt more.
Wise words from Johnny up there ^.
If the pain puts you off, then you don't want it enough. If you're anything like me this probably changes day to day, in the end I just got it booked and got on with it. I was glad I did (still am).
I fancy another large piece, no firm ideas of what I want yet though but it'll almost certainly involve the other side.

Just been catching up on this thread.

I'll get the better half to take some pics of my ink - they're all nearing or over ten years old (and I'm crap with suncream) so they're not looking their best, would be interested in people's experiences of 'freshening' existing tatts...

Gretch - I know two people who have had bamboo dot tatts done. One in Thailand (which was less does and more of a chisel shape). Very cool watching it done, lots of blood! His covered his shoulder/upper arm, and he said that his arm went numb very quickly then he couldn't feel a thing. Took a long time to heal.

The other had his done by a mental Thai bloke in Fratton (iirc). This was again with bamboo but sharpened to a very fine point. Lovely piece, and again he said it essentially felt like a dead arm to begin then went numb.

Not sure if that helps (assume you're thinking of using a gun), but they're my second hand experiences.

We have two types of people that come in the shop for a first tattoo; people who are terrified and worried they won't be able to cope and people who are full of bravado and happy to say how pain doesn't affect them,

9 times out of 10 it's the ones who are worried that make it through fine and the ones who don't worry struggle.

Tattoos do hurt whatever people say but if you go in thinking the worst it's not usually that bad.

^^ Not in my experience so I suspect it really does vary. Shoulder blade area was a breeze whereas inner arm was a killer.

I'm also thinking of getting part of my ribs done as an extension of the shoulder blade piece, and I'll be honest that I'm also a bit worried however...
In my experience it's not the pain itself that was too bad, it was a combination of time (3hr sessions) and blood sugar/adrenaline that seemed to be the issue. I did one session on an empty stomach and really struggled, getting the shakes and feeling faint and generally struggling. The pain was around a 5 out of 10 in severity, but a long session was a proper struggle.

I'd say eat a decent meal, drink lots of water and don't be afraid to ask for shorter sessions and it'll be fine. smile

The artist who did my chest, ribs, belly was insistent on making sure I was not on an empty stomach.

She obviously doesn't like passed out clients.

IME, that picture is fairly accurate - I've had my groin done, which was more painful than shattering my kneecap into six pieces. Also my shoulder/blade/clavicle, where a couple of points hurt almost as much as my groin.

Calf was fine, although he seemed to hit a weird reflex point so that the piercer in the shop had to be called in to hold my ankle down! Top of calf/nearing inside of knee was pretty bad...

All the fleshy/muscley bits were fine though.
