The boost vlave thread has prompt me to write this one.

What are the options for tuning your S yourself?

I guess its not worth touching the air filters if they are Pipercross. The induction looks fairly good too.

- Chipping? (perferably not with stones across the bonnet!)
- Boost valve?
- Exhaust?

Do any of the above make any diffence?
Is the Ford engine already tuned as far as possibly with out major changes?
Im guessing the cams have already been changed?

What are your experiences/knowledge on this.

Just the post i was going to write
Thought about all these options, chipping etc but you dont seem to get anywhere without changing Cams etc

As far as I know the ford 2.9 engines in the S are standard, you can get a pair of K&N filters although will need to fabricate a mounting plate for them.

I found the having the head lightly skimmed and reconditioned with 3 angle valve seats helped make a few more BHP, mine managed about 180bhp after it was done.

Having looked at major engine work I decided to best option was to save the money and put it toward a bigger engined car, hence the Griff

Leebee may know of another few mods available.

Its part of a porting job on the head to improve the induction and exhaust airflow... done from three angles..

Followed Paul's S around Zolder last year and it was a *lot* faster than standard, I had to look twice to make sure there wasn't a V8 under the bonnet!

What about upgrading 2.9s to 24v? Even if it was possible, I'd thingk cost and availability might outweigh the benefits. Is it possible?

Would a K&N add much, given the standard Pipercross filter?

It is where the valve and the seat are recut to have 3 angles on them, rather than a straight edge. Improves airflow. It is usually done when porting and flowing the head.


I think cleaning the Pipercross one would do just as well as adding K&Ns as they are generally rated the same or very similar for airflow. But K&Ns do look nice. Apparently the 24v is a very expensive conversion.

I've not looked into tuning th V6 yet. But I was thinking of: Ported and flowed head, possibly bigger valves if possible, and maybe a high lift cam.

Yes it is.. I'm depserately trying to remember who on here has done it too...

It was mickypee I was thinking of ..a 4.0l Cosworth engine in an S. not finished yet though.

Sorry, I side tracked a little. Getting it back on topic what mods have you done to your S?
Include suspension/wheels/tyres/Leven bits etc.

Talk to burton Power, they specialise in these engines. can be found at

Personally I have not done much (yet) I have a brushed alloy gear knob with wood band round it to match wood dash, and have fitted a wood steering wheel (from a chimp). Fitted Alpine head unit and Sony speakers in the doors where the old ones were. None of which is performance enhancing. Suspension was replaced before I got it.

It could have done some better suspension though, I remember comments about me running on the door handles through the corners

GBGaffer IIRC...

Engine in the S is a standard Ford unit.. nowt appears to have been done. In fact looking through the archives, the manifolds are different (and therefore the exhuast as well) and the induction system.

Probably best to sort out the "breathing" (air intake and exhaust) first, then start tinkering with other bits...

Surprisingly no one else has mentioned changing the cam...

I am going to build a Cosworth v6 24v in an S3c;I bought a complete runner with only a genuine 56,000miles.
According to me,the most difficult and expensive thing is making new exhaustmanifolds.will bring more news in a few months.

see GBGaffer. another local PH'er and thoroughly top bloke. 2.9 into cosworth that is very rapid. i would love to have followed his example. what a car.
