Checked the oil on Saturday on my E39 M5 and all was fine, the wife went round to her parents today and mentioned that the check oil sign came up (they are 10miles away) I thought i must have mis-read the dipstick. This evening i get a call to say from her dad to says its left a patch of oil on the pavement. I phone the wife to stop straight away (further 2miles down the road)..Anyway. I had not screwed the cap on and oil had leaked all over the engine. I re-checked the oil when i got home tonight and it was showing as just on the first section of the dipstick,

Do you think that this could have caused any problems ?

I have re-filled the oil (1.5l) of 10W 60W tonight and fired her up, Everything sounds okay, I will re-check the oil before she goes out at the weekend to give it chance to settle overnight.

How can i clean all of the residual Oil from the engine ?

I had the same issue. That cap can be a tinker.

I was driving around at night and failed to see the large plume of smoke coming from my rear end. The oil was spilling over onto the hot manifold.
Anyway, it was only once I got home, realised what I has done that the fear really set in. The cap had long since gone and I couldnt determine how much I had spewwed out.
I had to walk to the dealers, buy a new cap and numerous litre bottles of their TWS which is so overpriced, and filled it up until I got a register from the dipstick. 5L later and it was duly refilled.
It took me nearly a day to clean the whole mess up from under the bonnet.
I would say that if you only lost 1.5L you can be sure of no problems.
The only way you could ever tell without a symptom would be, compression test, oil analysis for swarf etc or strip down the engine.

I wouldn't have thought you'd caused ay major problems.

With regards to getting the oil off, try gunk from halfords just apply with an old paint brush and hose off.

Christ 5l !! I think I would have been crying on the floor if I had dropped 5l...

What did you use to clear up the Oil ? Also I have been noticing that I always seem to have a little residual oil around the cap and casing ? Do they become lose over time ? Its not alot I can just see the that the casing is shiney in between checks...

I did this last week.

Fortuantely the cap was sitting atop the rocker cover as if the car had not moved an inch. Only lost 0.5l anyhow. Still made a helluva mess mind

You didnt see me...i nearly was.

I used GUNK from Halfords. I got the one in the small gerry can rather than the aerosol, its easier to use and rub it on liberally with a clean paint brush. Just washing it away with water isnt good enough as used engine oil is nasty stuff. Put on your marigolds and give it a rub down. Expect some of your plastics to have discoloured, I bought new ones, caps etc.

The oil cap has a rubber seal that can perish, the dealers have spares in stock.
If the oil is coming from the rocker cover seal, that is a regular issue too.

Are you saying you lost 5l of oil ? I cant believe the engine survived to be honest - you should get and play the lottery wink
