<rant on> Okay, I'm normally a laid back happy camper and understand that my TVR (may) have the odd hiccup. However, my current car has had the same problem looked at on 3 separate occasions and still nobody has been able to find a cure. I don't want to suggest for a second that the dealer or the factory haven't tried their best - they really have. However, they can't fix it and I can't live with it. I've only had the car since August, this is my 'fun' car, used mainly at the weekends. The sad thing is I seem to spend most of my time in it taking it to and from the dealership. I'm getting really hacked off with it. I spent saturday driving to the garage and back only to find on the way home that the problem is still there. Since then the car has remained parked in the garage. What a waste of a weekend.

I'm getting to the point of asking the dealership to take it back, I see little point in having a 'toy' I can't play with. This problem was noted on the sales order form, this tells me I've tried to put up with it since day one, I'm now getting sick of it as I can't use my car.

The problem is this, the car screams (and I mean a very high pitched scream) at speed. This makes it unbearable to drive.

So I'm looking to the PH collective for suggestions. I don't want this to turn into a 'knock' TVR post because the likelyhood is I will get another one, I love them. Trouble is, I'm no longer 'in love' with this particular one. </rant off>

Humph, a very miserable Jo

PS: Please don't suggest that I turn the radio up, that's another problem, it is still turning itself off when I go over bumps and around corners! At least I can laugh about that particular problem though!

Is it a whiney type gearbox scream or is it an engine or wheel/diff noise?

Have you increased speed slowly and noticed when the noise starts?

Does it only happen above a certain rpm in all gears or is it purely speed related, eg. only starts above 50mph in any gear?

Sorry about all the questions, without answering them my intial feeling is it's gearbox/drivetrain related.

What have the dealer done to rectify the noise and what have they told you it is?

Hi Jo,

You have my sympathies, ironing out all the niggles in a TVR does take a lot of patience...

Is it wind noise ? After the factory fitted a new roof to my car under warranty to stop it leaking back in early 2001, I had a high pitched wind noise that would appear at speed coming from the rear edge of the roof. This was cured by my dealer fitting an extra rubber seal along top of the roll over hoop(b-post)which the back of roof sits onto. Has your car actually been back to the factory for this and they still could not fix it ?

As for your radio switching itself on and off, I guess that is a loose connection which surely your dealer can sort easily ?

If those are your only two niggles then I'm sure you will get them fixed soon and you will be enjoying your Tuscan to the full and looking foward to those sunny winter days when you can get the roof off...

Good luck,
Whitey

Yes it is wind noise, it is coming from the drivers side of the windscreen and not the roof. So far the factory have replaced the seal around the window and adjusted the drivers door window height. All this did was to change the speed the problem occurs at from 90mph to 30mph!

The dealership put masking tape over the areas where the roof joins the body of the car and the noise was still there. They found that there was a gap between the windscreen and the body so they've re-sealled the whole thing again. They were convinced it was sorted this time. As the seal was still wet when I collected it on Saturday I can only guess that they didn't have the opportunity to road test it. Thankfully the work they did this week means it is no longer doing it at 30mph it's back to 90mph! Oh, and they've managed to eliminate the roof as the culprit. Progress!

You would think so, but my stereo isn't a bog standard thing. If you have a look in one of my previous posts about Ice/Dab you'll see what I mean. The latest recommendation is to replace the head unit as they've thoroughly checked all the connections.

Yeah I know, I'm just feeling fed-up with it at the moment. I want to be out in the car on days like today, but unless I take the roof off it is really no fun. The main issue is that I can't see an end to it, I'm really easy-going and I know that I'll keep putting up with it when the dealership is being so helpful. These problems have been there since I test drove the car, I just can see how they're ever going to get sorted out if they haven't been fixed by now. The dealership are very good but they don't have a magic wand!

There has to be a point when enough is enough. I'm almost there, my lovely new car just isn't fun anymore, it's making me miserable.

I've noticed a similar thing before, on the cars I've seen it was caused by some sort of air disturbance around the door mirror, have you tried driving the car with the door mirror turned around flat to the door (ie so you can't see through the mirror) .. this changes the shape of the mirror as the air sees it and stops the noise. However you obvioulsy can't drive for ever like this, what I did was space out the mirror mount so the mirror body was physically slightly further away from the car bodywork, moved the noise up to 130mph plus (private test track officer) and as the owner very rarely drove at this speed he said he could live with it .. might be worth a try??

Thanks Joolz, I'll give that a try tomorrow. Probably best not to do it tonight as I'm the wrong side of a bottle of wine!

warning when turning the drivers mirror in.

Be careful "Lady Topaz" had a fault on her car whereby turning the mirror in, the foot scratched the paintwork.

Yours might be better assembled but just in case take care

tvr power coventry are alos part of tvr blackpool, (i believe) the guy there called dom is the nuts muts, really understanding, especially when he had our car as its used for everyday use. knows tvr inside and out, and really approachable, even for us women, doesn't treat you like an idiot when you ask him questions on the car.

give him a ring on 02476 366177 - it can't do any harm, also between him and our dealer our car was back asap. got a chance to thank him at bruntingthorpe earlier this year. can't fault them atall.

also they have a proper tvr courtesy car !! - let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the recommendation, your guy sounds great. However I am pleased to report that since posting Mike at H L Gorner has contacted me. He was most concerned that I was still having problems, so much so that he's arranging to collect my car tomorrow and he's said he's going to keep it until it's fixed!

So, he and I are keeping fingers and toes crossed that they can fix my car this time!

In the meantime I get to play out a new Tuscan S!

I'll keep you all posted on developments and hopefully be able to tell you how they stopped my car screaming!

This is actually a Tuscan design fault and not just my car. My dealer tried raising the mirror stem but there is only about one eighth of an inch to play with. It is not enough to cure the problem if someone walks into your door mirror from the rear to the front and pinging it back on itself. This only occurs on pax side. . Lady T

Lady Topass - why were you using your foot to adjust your mirror anyway? Are you a contortionist? Would explain the exotic stage name, I suppose.

UPDATE......

Thanks to all who offered help, I said I would let you know the outcome....

The car is back with me and is much much better, albeit not fully cured. I'm still getting a high pitched whistle between 105 and 110mph (obviously I only found this out when I tested it on a track! ) At all other speeds it is absolutely fine, no whistle and not that much wind noise, has anyone else experienced this?

Gorners found that problem seemed to stem from the windscreen not fitting properly, wind was getting through the gap left between it and the body of the car! Their first strategy was to remove all seals/sealant and refit the screen, it turns out it was the windscreen that was a fault so they had to redo all the work and put in a new windscreen. They also replaced all the roof seals in their quest to solve the problem.

Thanks to all at Gorners for their hardwork and commitment to getting this (pretty much!!) sorted.
