Hi all,

Depressing times ahead due to a dramatic increase in mileage so I need to go look at diesel misery mobiles frown Obviously it's an ideal time to be shifting a bigger engined motor, my timing is as impeccable as always!

So spec is:
'98S 528i SE Steptronic (post Nikasil)
85k
FSH (all BMW bar the last done at BMW specialist)
Dark silver (lachs?)
Black leather interior, lots of toys.
17" Style 32 alloys, two new rears, fronts have lots of tread still.
BMW aero kit

Bad bits:
Stone chips
Couple of very small rust bubbles
Alloys aren't too pretty, not badly curbed mainly flaked lacquer.
Duff front ABS sensor, diagnosed by indy last Monday, just need time to get it booked in, tricky with the new job.

Go on then, cheer me up with some awful values wink

Cheers,
Rob

You'll be lucky to even get 2 grand for it. Shame really given it's clearly a lovely car. You have to ask yourself if its worth changing?

I'd spend the money you were going to spend on a diesel on petrol for your 528i. Petrol is 13p a litre cheaper anyway and it'll do over 30mpg on a run.

The cheapest car is always the one you've already got..

Where is that link with the calculator of these kind of things?

It works out how many years it will take to pay off etc, very good. On the whole I agree with Fox.

Mine's 18 months younger on a V plate, has got 10K less miles on it, and if I got 2.5K for that p/x, I'd have the salesman's hand off.

ETA: I'm keeping it. There's not a car out there that I can afford that I'd rather have, right now.

Hi guys,

I'm sadly not unsurprised by the replies frown

Is it worth changing? I know, it's a fecker, cost of changing will take minimum of 1 year to recoup so I'd have to keep it longer than that (more depressing) - I don't want to be dropping more than £4k on whatever.

If I can get something that'll average 50odd mpg then at least it will pay back over time. I'm currently averaging around 30mpg (brim to brim measure) and will be doing 30+k a year on the road. Based on that then I should be saving around £1500 a year in fuel

Naturally I've considered the old lpg malarkey but using the online calcs for that I'd only make around £800 a year saving so would take even longer to recoup.

It's a pita!

Cheers,
Rob

With those numbers, keep it. I doubt you'll find much for £4k that can average over 50mpg anyway.

Are you saying a 528 can average 50mpg??? I am getting rid of my 328 then as it only gets 38 at best on long runs.

No I am saying that being able to replace it with something that genuinelly DOES do 50mpg average is remote.

Ah I see.

I bought our dark blue 328 coupe a couple of months ago for just £1750. Its got FSH and loads of extras, like computer, leather and M bits on it.Beautiful condition with 111000 miles on but I imagine you may only get that sort of price for your 528.
You are better off keeping it....Or give someone a bargain!

Could you find a garage to keep it in and then buy an old'ish economical diesel just to commute with? I had an '03 Focus Tdci ghia for 3 years until September - did over 50k in it. Apart from consumerables (tires/brakes) all it needed was a near side drivehsaft @ £100. It had every option inc leather and was a comfy ride and, most importantly, averaged over 50 MPG every tank! I bought this for £6000 and part ex'd it for £2500 with 117k so it cost me a little of £1100 a year.

Plenty of motors out there that could do the job, something like this would be OK, although I'd prefer a few less miles:

Of more interest though is this motor that the same dealer has:

Sweet, odd that it doesn't have the 'technical data' tab wink

Strangely obvious but often overlooked.

Those who change from an '05 plate M5 etc to an '08 Audi A3 TDI think they are saving money but once you factor in he cost to actually change, the sheer amount of miles you need to do in order to recoup the higher fuel price, plus the amount extreme sports you need to do in lieu of the excitement of owning a petrol car, the financial aspect becomes irrelevant.

Unless the change is a direct swop with no costs whatsoever the change will take a long time to repay the initial cost of the outlay.

You won't see a sustained average 50mpg+ from that, and when the injectors/turbo need replacing (This is common on the TDCi) your fuel savings are instantly wiped out.

I have a very similar 528. My advice is to keep driving it. You will not save money by chopping it for a diesel and will be kicking yourself in a very short time.

LPG it for the same cost to change to a more expensive diesel. I know what car I'd rather be doing 100 miles a day in.

Does the mpg make that much of a difference?

Really?

Hmmm, get the bugger T&T'd and run it instead. I wonder what's up with it for them not to bother? Half a million miles removed from the odo perhaps? wink However I see it's in the very salubrious Cheetham Hill district so I'm sure such behaviour wouldn't occur rofl

'ere, the cheeky bugger's put it up by a fiver!
http://manchester.gumtree.com/manchester/05/290341...

Been having a look in to lpg'ing. There's a place in Corby that'll do a fit for £1500. Assuming a max loss in performance of 15% then I could save a smidge over £1k/year. The question is whether the 15% loss is correct.

Hmmm, curse you for linking to gumtree! Shame this isn't a 525:
