Should be a very noticeably difference smile Engine will need to be in tip top condition though.. Turbo's and inlet manifolds are not known for their hardiness on these engines.

ye i have heared about the turbo problems on these cars. and experienced a bit of trouble in the form of injectors that i had to replace - costing £2500, so dont really want to be replacing my turbo shortly after dishing out that much lol.

have you got one?

I have a 120D. Similar engine, but I do next to no miles in it, and its bog standard. So I don't expect any problems from it (I did have an E46 325i compact at one point however). Im certainly no stranger to modifying and remapping cars though.
If it was my Compact, I would smile But again, only if it's known to be in good order first. Re Turbo's: I always got the impression that the actual turbo didn't fail, it was more the ancillary parts of the turbo that failed. But BMW being BMW would rather sell you an entire new turbo at great cost, even though some far cheaper and simpler part (like a wastegate valve or whatever) may have cured the problem. Personally, I wouldn't worry about the turbo (plenty of turbo specialists can help out if needed). I'd worry more about the inlet manifold and it's flaps!? Quite nasty if it breaks apparently.. Some owners seem to be replacing them as a precaution. Probably isn't a bad idea, particularly if you intend to tweak the engine.

Sounds like it needs to be traded for a 130i. Why tolerate the tedium of a turbodiesel if you are not reaping the economy benefits? Get shot of it for a 130i.

The 130i is nicer im sure. But when I got the 120D, there was no 130i. The 120D has been a good car, and it's been great for the odd trip to Scotland and France. Good range and brisk enough.. Sure, it sounds like a knackered Ford transit at idle, but other than that, its a great motor smile No real reason to be rid of it just yet. Oh, and I also have a fondness for forced induction these days. I'd be wanting the 135i if I was changing wobble

Sort of, yes. They look very different, but the overall size is largely the same.

There was a thread about that here very recently. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
Have a look at that, and look at the link Silent K gave. Lots of info there.
If you were going to replace it as a precaution, I'd see about having an indy do it. Part wont be any cheaper, but you'd save a ton on labour rates.

P,
