Filter ??

Hi all

I have a 2001 vw golf convertible. the management light has come on! i took it to the garage and was told it was a filter of some sort, i cant quite remember . it is located under the air filter.
Does any one know what this is and where i could get a replacemet.

I think it was some sort carbon filter ?
