Is it any good? Were there different versions (i.e. a basic in dash sat nav) or were they all the pop up screen type? I've seen a couple of cars advertised as having sat-nav, but can't see a pop out screen on the interior photos. confused

Also, what do BMW charge to update the software, assuming the car I look at has an older version?

Cheers

Business Nav just has 'lurn left' or 'turn right' on the small radio screen, and is generally accepted as being crap - especially as (IIRC) Professional Nav only cost £500 more.

Pro Nav has the pop up screen, which is the one to have, not just for the nav - but also for the EQ controls if you have Carver and also iPod interfaces.

You can update the firmware yourself from x5world.com, BMW charge £££. The new nav discs are £99 on an exchange basis from BMW.

Cheers Mattt. I'm was going to look at a car on Saturday, but it had the small screen on the dash, so I assume it's the business sat nav.

Might give that one a miss...

I don't have satnav so these are thoughts from what I've read/heard about the pop up. As a satnav it's average but can never compete with a TomTom or similar and doesn't have the flexibility/upgradeability. This is why I wasn't fussed about having it when I bought my car. Obviously the plus side is you don't have a device stuck to your windscreen which needs removing after each use to avoid inevitable theft mad!!

In hindsight I would have preferred to get one because of the additional functionality Mattt mentions especially if you want to get a get to connect your ipod.

The Sat Nav itself is mediocre, although it has TMC functionality that my portable Sat Nav doesn't. It also doesn't have speed camera functionality, unless you bugger about with the disc and 'Pimp my nav' software.

It's a pain in the arse to learn to use, but you do get there. I like the way it is integrated into the car, and commands are heard over the music (TomTom can be quiet) and the distance to turn appears on the dials in front of you. You can also call up POIs, say restaurant near you for £20/head - and then call them via the bluetooth handsfree.

Is this on the pop-up, or the regular as well?! I guess just the pop up right...

I guess just pop up - and only if it had bluetooth prep.

I've got the pro-nav in my Z4MC and I still use my TomTom 730 instead.

The TT screen is smaller, but it's clearer, faster to input locations, let's me do itinerarys, lets me customise everything by simply connecting it to my computer and I can update the speed cams & POIs s frequently as want without having to mess around with Pimp-My-Nav/ImgBrn/UltraISO which has created 24 (out of 24 attempts) failures so far despite following the instructions to the letter - the nav part works but I get no POIs whenever I try to add the speed camera database to it.
