Hi, looking at the 2.8 quattro avant verus the 2.5tdi quattro avant, is the fuel and runnings a big issue between the 2 cars as the 2.8 is cheaper to buy.

Firstly, what variant are you talking about?

The Audi 80 and A4 2.8 V6s were not that economical, you'd probably get around 28/30mpg on a long run and less if driving around town.

I'm not a huge fan of older diesel technology so in this instance I would probably take the 2.8 V6.

If the chance of a newer diesel was on the table then I may well be tempted.

Its the 1999 2.8 A6 QUATTRO AVANT & THE 2001 2.5TDI 180BHP QUATTRO AVANT .

not easily as they are both far away ,its worth saying the 2.8 does have a really full history ,the other not full but seems good state .

I would go with neither and find a 1.9TDI. Lighter engine, better on fuel and with the 130 TDI performance is very similar. More to choose from as well.

I've owned a 2.8 Quattro and sample the 2.5 tdi Quattro for an hour or two, I think it was only in 150bhp form. Both were manuals.

The 2.8 sounded brilliant and wasn't bad on fuel. Not super fast but a fine spread of power and nice and smooth. Had a few steps in the power delivery.

The 2.5 diesel is not really grunty - it doesn't come on boost with a sudden woosh and feel super fast like some turbo diesels. However it revved nicely and went smartly. It feels like a quiet and smooth 2.5 petrol - which may be a good thing for you or a bad thing. It sounds good and is smooth and quiet.

As stated the 1.9 TDi is surprising in the A6 - it really moves it along well and you don't need much more go. However its turbo wooshy and noisy which slightly take away from the character if you were expecting it to be a refined executive sort of car.

Of the 3 I would try to find the 2.5 diesel first but if the prices were too high or the right car unavailable (get leather because cloth ruined mine for me) then the 2.8 petrol is fine and sounds brilliant. The 1.9 would suit more of a workhorse or higher mileage ownership and I'd avoid it if the maths could add up to do so, notwithstanding the fact it's a bit common and rather plain.

Thanks everyone for contributions , not decided yet but a cheap 2.8 may be on the cards,gone against the 2.5tdi v6 as too much complaints of oil leaks from mechanics and to be honest its not that economical and they always want more money for them secondhand . The 1.9 is a great option but I cant seem to find one well priced in my area .

I had a 97 2.8 and it was nice enough, had leather and bose and was a nice environment to be in. It had a very comprehensive audi service history but still leaked oil and coolant (I didn't check it out well enough but it was a bargain). There were a lot of dogs around when I was looking.

I'd probably go one extra and say go for the 180bhp 1.8T, I think it's a better compromise, light and swift and reliable. I got about 26-28mpg out of my 2.8. One thing to check out which I saw on every car I looked at - some pixels on the dash centre computer were missing, it got worse in warm weather (or could have been cold, can't remember - sorry!) and the stereo had a dodgy volume - this is very common and not an easy fix if it has the bose upgrade.

note you will note get a 1.9 130 and quattro in the A6 chassis.

Well if I told you that the fans were replaced on Monday on our 2.5tdi Allroad for £626 on Monday, and have today been told that the diesel injector has failed, so that will be another £3100!! Does that help make your mind up?

Stay away from 2.5 TDi's are really unreliable, Turbo and injection pump are common failures.
