whats the law/regs regarding parking a motorbike on the pavment?

If I'm going out to a shopping centre I normally just use the bike parking bit.

but say, on a highstreet, am I allowed to park next to the doors of the shop I go in aslong as there is ample space to get past?

As far as I'm aware the same parking restrictions apply on the pavement as on the carriageway, so double yellows on the road means no parking on the pavement too. So even if you leave "ample space", if there's restrictions on the high street (and there will be) you can still get done.

Also you're not allowed to park on a verge or footway but that isn't often enforced where I live, luckily!

You can't legally park on a public footway. You might get away with it you might not.

Try pointing out to them what it says on your tax disk

The only time you may get away with parking on the pavement, I think, is if it is the forecourt of a shop you are visiting and the area is owned by the shop (and they give you permission). Often the first few feet of pavement outside the shop are owned by the shop and you may get away with cosily tucking your bike up there.

Otherwise, as already stated, you cannot park on the pavement at all unless specifically told you may.

even that isn't allowed. If the public customarily have access to that bit of pavement, it's the public pavement, even if privately owned.

when my daughter was in the Bristol children's hospital after a major op in 07, I took my bike as someone had to be with her 24 hours a day so me and the wife took 12 hours shifts. i parked on the path in from of the hospital doors (well 10 feet away) and hospital workers and everyone were doing this every day.
