"So any 330d made in 2002 will be 204 bhp?????????"

No. We've got an '02 330d Sport that's 185bhp. I think the facelift happened the latter part of 2002/early 2003. If in doubt, check the log book.

Mike325112,

I see on your profile you get 40MPG from your 330d. Is that an accurate overall figure? I've got two 330d's (2002 & 2004) and only ever got 40+ MPG once and that was on a 50 mile motorway cruise in the early hours of the morning (no traffic). Have you had it remapped?

The only easily visable thing between ours (2002 & 2004) is the Climate control setup. For want of a better description.. the older car has the hot and cold buttons next to each other whereas the new model had them above each other (yes, I know how 'ami' that sounds!). Apart from that they're visibly the same in the cabin. It's only when you get the facelift in 2005 that it becomes obvious with new lights, bodywork and facia.

They are slightly different under the bonnet with a different layout but I'm no mechanic so I couldn't tell you what's what. If you're seriously interested drop me a PM and over the weekend I'll take a few pics of the pre/post 2002/3 face lift.

No that is genuine in the summer, falls to around 38 in the winter. Its the Mrs car and all she does is 25 miles a road and motorway to work. Saw 46 on a cruise to gatwick from the mids last year at circa 90leptons. Im amazed by it frankly, I see around 40-45 from my 1er.

Oh and no remap that I know of on either of ours. I don't think they need it and its too risky. I think that if I was after more power I would go bigger engine petrol and a bit older.

I wish I could get that from mine. I only ever measure mine once per fill up (reset when exiting petrol station) and I do have quite a few short start/stop journeys first thing in the morning (drop kids off etc) which may affect the figures.

I came from a Focus Tdci (daily hack) which always returned over 50MPG and unfortunately bought these two cars within a month of each other. Knowing what I know now, I'd probably have 'swapped' one of them for a 330i or even an M3 Evo as they're not a economical as I thought compared to the petrol version and (my other toy was an Impreza) I do miss the engine note!

I think we are lucky with the 330d, it seems to be at the higher end of the mpgs people get. I do wonder if it has been fettled with in the past, but it has been serviced at BM so I guess they would know and would have told me if it had been. I think its just the fact that it does very little town driving TBH.

I'm disapointed with my 1 series economy if I'm honest. I love the car and like the way it goes, its just that we have the 3 as well which on paper aint much faster but its so nice to have the straight six grunt. I wonder if I should have had a 130i

Metatron... I was in the same boat. Check the log book, it's the safest way, because driving them back to back I think you'd struggle to define the difference. With ours the 204bhp '04 is slightly smoother and slighty quicker off the start but mid range, IMO, there's naff all to call between them. Let me know if you want an 'under the bonnet' shot of each so you know what you're looking at.

Mike... I think the MPG is so subjective - my Mrs can't get anywhere near my MPG and she doesn't drive half as fast. We've got auto's on both and there is definately a good and bad way to drive these cars. She came from a 320d manual and was struggling to get mid 20's in the 330 until I showed her how best to use the auto box. Driver input is a huge variable in MPG.

Wrong on both counts. The E46 saloon was facelifted in late 2001, not 2002, and the engine change was in mid 2003, not when the facelift was. They are easily identified as they have 6 speed boxes if they are manual.

+1
It is the 6 speed box that give it away. I knew there was something obvious, but couldn't remember!

Ah, that would account for a lot. When in 'eco' mode I do go into the manual change on the autobox as it does tend to hang in the gears far too much. When cold and with a gentle acceleration in auto it won't change from 4th to 5th below 4000 revs, which, in a smoker, is far too much for my ears early in the morning!

It was facelifted once in late 2001 and the engine was upgraded in March 2003, or from week 9 production IIRC. The giveaway on the manual cars is the 6-spd box. The oil cooler is also relocated from the right hand side of the engine to a position behind the kidney grille.

There are no 204bhp 5-spd cars. Anyone selling a 5-spd manual car claiming 204bhp is telling porkies.

I've had 5 of them since 2001 so have a fair idea that the info above is correct! wink
