Morning all, don't know if you recall I lost 5th about 10 days ago, factory been shut for the week so rang yesterday to see about dropping it off, they can't look at it for at least a fortnight!! Its my main car so I thought sod it i'll drive it with 4 gears till they can sort it.....this morning fired her up, 200yds down the road theres like a grinding noise (Bit starter motorish?) then all shuts down, everything, I get out shut my door have a look, nothing obvious then she won't let me back in!! My 4yr old is sat inside and it takes me 20mins to get him out so I have just abandoned her at the roadside as I had the office to open up. Anyway, sorry for waffling, I've had the car 2 weeks beginning to lose credibility and patience, cud the 5th gear problem and this mornings episode be linked somehow? PLEASE HELP I WANT TO ENJOY MY CAR NOT HATE IT!! 
Sorry to hear you had probs, the kid in the back must have been stressful. Assume you got in via the 'manual' method.
I doubt this shut down is linked to the gearbox. The grinding could be the gear box. Unless the grinding was happening as you were trying to start her?
Get it low loaded to an expert.
Hire a cheap car until it is fixed.

Hi again, thanks for your comments tonto and jesse, yes I bought the car from a PH ad, it is the Starmist grey '98 4.5. I'm sure it was the starter but then all the doors/boot etc locking is weird, tried resetting the alarm no joy, i know the switches go but not all at once lol. She is now back with her maker in sunny Blackpool and I await their comments after they have had their full english in the AM
