Have you seen the add for what looks like a pretty top spec cerbera. See below.

What is the 12K of upgrades made up of ? I cant quite work it out?
Suspension
Brakes
Stereo
Lights
Alloys (albeit just standard 4.5 17s)
Exhaust
Induction tuning.
I would guess that lot could come to about 7 - 9K.
so does the engine rebuild and gearbox also get included in the 12K?
Dont get me wrong - I am not slagging this car, it looks great, I just cant work out the 12K.

30,000 miles. 4.2 Cerbera, 1997, with approx £12k worth of additional upgrades! Full TVRSH, usual TVR refinements including working A/C, CAT1, Sony MD, Leather / Suede interior. Plus front and rear Leven resin badges, alloy handbrake, filler cap and adjustable pedals.

Full blended Zertec light upgrade including gas-discharge mains and rear afterburners.

Upgraded 17” 4.5 alloys with new tyres, (plus spare wheel).

Full suspension upgrade including the latest Nitron NTR dampers, new springs and poly bushes. Recent full geometry and corner weight set-up by TopCats racing.

AP-six pot brake upgrade running huge 330mm AP disks and Frodo DS2500 pads, includes an AP brake bias adjuster (in car).

Full Joospeed induction upgrade including hi-flow filters and polished / modified intakes. The car is currently running a de-CAT’d sports exhaust (still have cats) sounds fantastic.

In addition to all the improvements and upgrades listed this car has had the following major work (have all receipts): Factory engine rebuild, new gearbox and clutch. It hasn’t missed a beat since this work was done, there are no major bills lurking around the corner with this car.

This car has been maintained regardless of cost and professionally upgraded where necessary. All maintenance was carried out by reputable TVR technicians (it will take you an hour to read through all the receipts). A stunning car and probably the best in the country.

Probably also been completely re-trimmed inside, getting rid of the vynyl and sack cloth. Might be an extra 1K+ on to, so thats 10k. Good Sony MD system and other bits would probably do it.

Would agree with that being a closer price to what I'd expect to pay for all that. Just totalled it up in my head at about £7.5k. Guess if it was all done by a dealer the price would be higher (but he's stated a lot of it's been done independently).

Nice colour, though... if that's a respray, then that'll have cost quite a bit.

I'd suggest it has had some re-trimming work done (the owners first post on PH did mention that the interior was looking a little worn) and the advert mentions leather/suide which is non-std. It looks a really nice car, if it wasn't so expensive I'd certainly consider it.

And that was only in September so he's not exactly had it long
Looks nice, sounds sorted, but still a little steep for a 97 4.2, remember one of those sold on here for £13k a few weeks ago, alright it would have needed £10 spending on it to make it look like this one but mods add very little value to a car if any and in some cases reduce it, I'd say £20k would be fair
just wish I was in a position to be buying, maybe after Christmas

Possibly. It's difficult to judge (see my other thread about the value of extras!). There's a yellow '97 in a dealer up here with similar miles for 17,995.
It's a tad concerning that he's only had it a short while (and that someone else is likely to have done all the work to the car).

I'm going to sound like a stalker, but I don't think he bought it in September either (more like February - info from tvr-cerbera.com).

As a new Cerb owner I hope you brainy lot can help me with a few of the following questions / points:

1/ Where can I get / access detailed maintenance features for a 1997 4.2 Cerbera (such as a Haynes manual)? Personally I am reluctant to give such a car to a spotty youngster in a main dealership on the other side of the country charging me £70/hr for something I can do equally as well myself. I live in Luton / Beds and cannot find anyone local that can help me. Perhaps one of you guys in email land can suggest someone?

2/ How do I remove the hot/cold fan control switches, without digging a chunk out of the wood effect panel? The cold switch is no longer ‘clicking’ when I press it therefore not working the fan, which means no cold air / air con! Not great over the last weekend.

3/ What rear pads would you suggest. The ones I have squeal so much its ridiculous and they rattle on the spilt pins as there is nothing else holding them in. Also the handbrake is useless, I have been told it cab be adjusted on the outside of the disc/drum, is this correct?

4/ The seats and steering wheel are very well worn, who would you suggest to re-trim and roughly what should I expect to pay.

5/ I have very good 17” wheels and tyres. I would like to buy 18” Spyders and sell the others. Where should I buy from?

6/ Has anyone replaced the Cats with small exhaust sections, rather than just straight through pipes? As much as loud is great, too loud is causing some problems with my neighbours!

8/ The fuel gauge has sheared the lens, meaning no plastic holding it together. Where to get another?

9/ Where can I get a detailed analysis of the engines performance. Mainly to find any possible problems before they may occur. Such as a compression / engine management / dyno test?

10/ What should the oil pressure gauge read?

11/ Still thinking…

Thanks for any help.

James.

Am I alone in thinking it odd that an AJP 4.2 would need a rebuild with (presumably) less than 30,000 miles on it?

...and a new gearbox too??

Only a bit concerned as my 4.5 has about 28,000 miles on it now, and all I've needed recently is a new clutch.

...and I too think £22,750 for a 97 4.2 looks a bit steep - I paid over a grand less than that for my 99 4.5 with 23K on it at the start of this year.

My brother bought a 98 4.2 with £15K worth of bills (this one www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=6&h=&t=52421 ) in September for £18K!!

looks good in that colour mind... Scotty, any interest?

cheers

And heres a 98 4.5 for £1k less

But at the end of the day you can ask whatever you like when your selling, whether someone pays it is another story though

Thanks DJ - he lives in Hong Kong and "needed" it for little brother's wedding in September (didn't want to be the only one of us without a Tiv), so was bought after a couple of telephone calls and emails. He picked it up at Stansted on the way back from the stag do in Prague and drove it straight to Devon - brave man !

(PS not as fast as mine though!!)

cheers

Really? Is there a noticable difference? I'd just about decided that a 4.5 over 4.2 wasn't worth the premium. So far I've heard:

- The earlier 4.2's aren't far off 4.5 pace
- Think of it as the difference between a 4 and 5 litre Rover V8 (i.e huge)
- The 4.5's a bit quicker but they're all damned fast.

So, after a 5ltr Griff, will they all (speed 6 included) feel a lot quicker, or will I need the 4.5 to keep the thirst for more power at bay?

That's true, but on the other hand there's no point pricing it so high that people don't even consider going to view it because they know what most people wouldn't expect to be offered 4k less than the asking price without being kicked out and accused of wasting their time!

Looks like Steve Earps old car??? If so, the engine work involved an argument with several tvr dealers/ an independant who diagnosed the problem etc etc.. Im not actually sure it needed the engine work in the end, but it was done.

It does seem a little pricey though! It is the only car I have ever heard with a sports exhaust and a decat - it really did shake the ground!!!!! Fabulous stuff, although too loud IMHO.

Anyway, 4.5s are generally quicker because of thier torque spread, theres nothing in it in true power terms with many 4.2s being more powerful. However there are usually more differences between two cars of the same engine than two cars with 4.2/4.5 engines...

At the end of the day, if you can buy a 4.5 for the same or (in our case) less than 4.2 money its worth it. It may also be worth going the 4.5 route if you wish to retrofit the Red Rose upgrade which does take the power game on a fair bit!

Nah, not much in it really, just me convincing myself it was worth the extra few quid for the 4.5!!

If you're moving to a Cerb from even a 5 litre Griff, the hike in performance is significant. The engines are just completely different in character - Rover V8 is all low down torque, AJP V8 delivers the goods above 3.5K rpm, and overall is way quicker IMHO

Another reason for me getting a 4.5 is that I might (assuming Santa Claus is generous) want to get a RR upgrade for the genuine 400+bhp next year, which can't be done on a 4.2. ...and I like the RL7 wheels!!

I wouldn always believe the miles on a cerb - the speedos often go and I wouldnt be suprised if they sometimes arent fixed for a few miles?!
Mileage is irrelevant re rebuilds. It is all down to luck and treatment.
Although a new ECU could speed up the process? ;-)
