Was first into the work carpark this morning and decided to mess about with the SMG settings for a short while just really to get a feel for the way it worked on snow. Newbie owner y'see. biggrin

Now, I've had a few days out at the Knockhill skidpan in the past therefore I would feel quite confident if the back end was to come away inadvertantly but as I'm sure you will agree, this is probably not an ideal scenario at 6am! hehe

So guys, any tips/advice on using the gearbox in these conditions?

TIA, Nick.

The lowest setting in auto selects 2nd to pull away which works in the snow.

Mine is in "Reverse" and stopped :-)

The M6 wouldn't get it's power down to pull off my drive never mind actually get anywhere with this weather!!

I felt happy with the SMG box - set to auto, first setting; changes nice and smooth and no undue dramas when pulling away.

But..... I have never driven a car that has felt that treacherous in snow before - handling was all over the shop yesterday - at low speeds on local roads around town I was collecting a queue of small japanese and euro boxes whilst grannies in micras were streaking away from me. I was like Bambi on ice. Ended up going back home and getting the TVR out - 90 bhp less, thinner wheels and felt much happier.

On the whole my taste in cars felt a little inappropriate yesterday (I can live with that for 1 day a year though).

Automatics of ANY nature are lethal on ice, but the SMG box has the advantage of carrying out ultra smooth changes - just like a CVT box. My wifes Citroen C2 VTR is the jerkiest semi-auto gearbox I have come across & nearly killed her yesterday when it changed down from 3rd to 2nd, breaking traction & spinnng her 360 on a main road....
I have to say..

The C2 VTR 'box isn't the best when in the snow.. And the changes aren't major quick.

It'll do though.

I have mine in S1 and start off in second. When I left my g/f on Monday morn, 6 inches of snow, it took me 5 mins to do 50 yards. TC was working overtime! smile

The thickness off the tyres isnt great in thie weather so it's pakred up for today.

if you had winter tyres, it would have been fine. My M5 was fine in 4" of fresh snow yesterday morning.

I also have a VTR as a daily driver but unfortunately it's been off the road after what seems like some tt has taken a knife to my drivers side rear tyre... curse

I hardly ever use the auto box in that though as it is pretty crap, missus likes it though so hey-ho!

Thanks for all the advice guys however, it has been noted for future reference as unlike you lot the snow up here only last a couple of days and now it has returned to typical February rain...
