I had one go in my old 325 - it was the connector that was corroded. You can tell which one is faulty - park somewhere quiet, turn off the engine (leave ignition on) and put in reverse. Listen carefully by each sensor and you should hear a rapid clicking sound if OK.

It'll be tough to diagnose I imagine. I only get a failure message once in a while. The rest of the time they are working ok.
Does the bumper have to be removed to replace these things or they can be got at from underneath (mine's an E90)?
Are they relatively cheap to replace (to buy)?
