Strange Noise Help (2003 VW Polo 1.2)

Evenin' all! My girlfriends just text me saying her car is broken, she says it's making strange scraping noises as if something were being dragged along under the car, just, there's nothing under there. The car in question is a 2003 VW Polo 1.2 S 3dr, my only guesses are some sort of belt/chain or the exhaust heat sheild being loose. Any ideas?

Need a bit more to go on with that. Is it engine or is it vehicle speed specific.

I.e does it make the noise when the engine is running and you are still, or only when you move along, does the noise change when you turn from side to side or press the brake pedal.


Amusing its vehicle speed related and noise changes when you load the wheel bearings, My guess is stone between the disc and back plate.

She says it is on and off and it happens both whilst moving and stationary.
It came back from the garage who couldn't find anything.
