VW....What was it?

I saw a strange Passat this last week in Italy. It was a WV Passat saloon with what looked like a factory quad exit exhaust system and a triangular air inlet in the front wing behing the front wheels. What was it and were they released in the UK?

Dont know about the triangular intake, but I beleive the R36 and the W8 Passat both have quad exhausts

As standard I think the R36 has two single exhausts. The W8 definitely had 4 but no wing vents. Could have been aftermarket I s'pose.

perhaps it was a phaeton, they do look like a passat in profile.
