New Sites for Phantom

Phantom Automotive, makers of the impressive looking Vortex GTR have been busy moving premises and setting up a new website.

We hope to have a roadtest of the car in the next few months but in the meantime you can check it out on their Flashy new website at www.phantom.uk.com

More GT40 front - Mercedes CLK centre - Elise S2 rear!

I note that it uses the Honda 2.7 engine from the Rover 827 / Honda Legend.

How about putting in the Rover 820 Turbo engine in - 200+bhp instead of that measley 174bhp. Or how about supercharging the 2.7l engine - should get an easy 250bhp!

assume that 820 motoris the same one as the 620 Ti. Very quick - with the 2.7 it takes 7 secs odd to hit the 60 - no good all show no go. turbo engine would be a great idea!

anyone have any idea what one of these things sells for ready built?

Ted, that is one nice looking car. It makes me think of alternatives to my lusting for a TVR tuscan (I'm in the USA)

2 questions:
1) What does the rear end look like?
2) What is Vemac doing?

Here's a bit more info giving some answers to some of the questions.

Yes, the price is high by kit car standards, but then the quality and attention to detail on this car is top notch. In no way does the Phantom look like most people's idea of a kit car, even close up.

Regarding performance with the 2.7 litre V6, the Phantom is a lot lighter than the Rover 827 so performance will be better. Power to weight ratio is about same as for Noble M10, meaning 0-60 should take around 6 seconds. Top speed for Rover 827 Vitesse is 137mph, Phantom has smaller frontal area so expect 140mph. Agree a supercharger would make things more interesting though!

As DIY price is around 20 grand I'd expect turnkey price to be around 25 to 30. Phantom were still deciding on that last time I spoke to them.

Back end of the car has nice sexy curves.

Drove prototype a couple of years back and should be road testing latest car for Pistonheads very soon.

Watch this space!

Gorgeous car, simply beautiful. No photos of the rear though, hope it has an equally nice butt.

Weight is good, under 1000 kg. Honda engine a good choice, sounds like the unit from the old Legend which is fine.

No details of the chassis construction though. Tubular steel spaceframe? Also, presumably mid engined judging by the proportions and air intakes, but transverse or longitudinal mount? Suspension specifications?

Very nice looking car. I saw it at Stoneleigh Kit Car show 3 or 4 years ago. I seem to recall it had a lot of room in the engine bay. V8 anyone?

...and yes I am a TVR owner!

yeah, V8 in that would be sweet.

must say if I was handing over £25,000 - £30,000 notes i would be a little concerned on re-sale values

Hmm . what a fine looking car. To me certainly has more appeal than TVR (opinion only). As for "kitcar" looks I dont think it has that at all. Remember the Ultima is only a kitcar too. The chassis they use is still used by the majority of "kit" manufacturers in the UK today, but in a very slight modified form and hasnt changed much from the original manufacturers design (kitdeal). The Honda/Rover power train is front wheel drive Steve, when used in the passenger car, so therefore when you pop it in the back it is an east/west motor doing the same, but at the back. How about using the standard Mitsubishi GTO V6 Turbo engine?? Same configuration but a standard 300hp. But the De Dion rear end I think could be improved. Easy to manufacture or borrow from another donor car Where is that 'A' arm IRS? As for a V8 option, one wants to select a power train package from a mainstream maker, then its all in one. How about the GM Cadillac Northstar?? 4litre odd, quad cam 32 valve all alloy east/west and gearbox all in one? Configurations are endless. Buy the kit and pop in your own motor, but remember the Jaguar XJ220 ?? Original V12 was dropped in favour of a V6 unit (6R4 Variant) same power, less weight. So when we start talking about 'kits' remember people pay 35K pounds or more for an Ultima ........ but check out what you are really getting ............

If you can all wait a few more weeks until I get the car on test you'll not only get photos of the rear end but full details on the mechanical specification and the reasons for the engine and suspension the Phantom has. Could tell you now but I want something left to write about...
