See RaceBoy's 'Buying Tips' down the page, or search the archives. I think the general opinion is get someone who knows the cars to inspect it (TVR dealer or specialist) or at the very least a knowledgable owner.

Yep, my 'Buying tips' thread is a good starting point along with........
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=64241&f=6&h=0
and nearly every other thread on this forum
Do a lot or research if in doubt ask, as cars in the under £20k bracket can be a moneypit waiting to happen, but can also be great second hand buys
When you find a car you like check everything, then check it again, then get someone who knows whats he's doing to check it
I'm lucky in that I've got a few people I like to think of as imparcial friends in the TVR world and a quick quote of a number plate can save me alot of leg work but just keeping your head and not letting your heart run away with it is a good idea, remember theres always another car

Was in the same position as yourself a few months back. Divorce sorted, Cerb was purchased and smile back on my face.

Try Rob Ingleby- his number is on numerous threads.

Bought a 97 R reg 4.2 for similar money to what you are quoting using Rob. He is excellent and car is fantastic!

Best of luck and things do get better
