but not many new cars have character. vague steering? maybe you drove a s
te example....i recently drove a £50k mercedes and thought it lacked feel compared to mine. non power steering gives you exact feel of what's going on. not driven an e30. but i think i would take an E30 M3 sport evo over a new 1 series any day of the week.
all of your comments on the negative sides can easily be solved with some decent upgrades, all for less than the price of a 1 series. i'm not slating the 1 series, i do like them. but are totally different cars to the earlier bmws.
seats easy enough to get hold of, suspension kits more than plentiful (i just fitted a new one to mine), other things like rear anti roll bars etc very easy to get done. if it's power and better economy you are after....fit another engine and a longer diff. they are cracking little cars, and i've driven a fair few newer cars, and soon i'm to drive the new M3 (can't wait!!!!!). but i just love the character of the older cars.
each to their own of course, but you can't slate it for problems it has which make it worse than a 1 series, when for the price you can easily rectify them.

I'm not knocking the old threes for the sake of it, they were OK twenty years ago. Neither of the two E21s we had (316 and 323i) had power steering, they were heavy when stationery, especially the 323i and very light and imprecise at speed. The E30s were a bit better. Never had an M3 E30, wouldn't have wanted the LHD and the dog leg box. Had a genuine Motorsport 325i which was a very good car, bit thirsty and loads of oversteer, but the steering was still too lowly geared. Luckily it hads loads of extras and the dealers were biting our hands for it when it came to trade in time.
