Just spoke to tesco about my insurance and found that they use their own classifications.

a 4.0 chim is group 85
a 2.5 Boxter is group 87
and a 3.2 M3 Evo is group 89

how the F*** does that happen?

I couldn't care less what the grouping is. I'm only concerned about how much money they'll charge.

It's not just performance, but cost of repairs, profile of drivers etc. Perhaps the BMW is more to repair, or experience shows they are more likley to be damaged and stolen. Certainly TVRs done seem to be as 'nickable' as other marques. You can be sure they have sacks of data which lead them to assign those ratings. 1-100 seems better than 1-20 anyway - more precise.

I've been informed by dealers etc. that TVRs are a little lower on some insurance company lists sice they tend to be driven by slightly more mature owners who want to keep the shiny side up and *not* by the Max Power generation.
I imagine the above is a follow on from the facts ...

How very odd. TVR quotes have consistently been (much) higher for me, as a relatively young driver, than quotes on other sportscars of similar value and listed ins gp. Pressed for an explanation Elephant said this was owing to the "very high" rates of total loss* owing to accident amongst TVR owners.

Pls don't flame me, I'm only reporting what they said. I'm sure you're all excellent drivers
