Am i asking too much??
Discussion
I'm trying to sell my car to fund an MR2, so i advertised my cr in the PH classifieds.
here is the ad
http://pistonheads.com/sales/908978.htm
Am i asking too much for the vehicle?
What car and Parkers say that privately a good condition one can be sold for around 1400-1500.
as mine has some minor cosmetic damage i lowered the price by about 300 even though that damage can be repaired for 170 (got a fair few quotes)
If it is deemed to be over priced, what sort of price would i be best asking for?
Having never sold a car before this is a total grey area for me

Not sure on the price but a tip for the future... wash your car before taking pictures going into an advert.
You want people to see the car in its best light not with dirty wheels and covered in mud.
Agree....It looks like you've tried to wash it but missed huge bits. You want people to see the car in its best light not with dirty wheels and covered in mud.
I had a car on the market for 6 weeks, it was washed and clean with some average photos. Got fed up so spent virtually all day with the clay bar and waxing it (looked better than new), got 4 phonecalls the day after new pics were uploaded and it sold within the week.
Also rotate your photos before uploading.

Agreed. Plenty of these about, so buyers can afford to be fussy - meaning you need to make yours stand out from the rest. When I see a car advertised which hasn't been washed, I think to myself "If he couldn't be bothered to wash it when selling, what else couldn't he be bothered to do?". I realise how stupid this sounds, but it's true. Spend some time valeting it and making it look as good as humanly possible - won't cost you much apart from time and if nothing else it gives the buyer a good impression that the car has been cared for.You want people to see the car in its best light not with dirty wheels and covered in mud.
I'll give it a good clean up tomorrow then and get some better pictures up.
i think im being fair personally, im just curious as to what makes you think your qualified to say its worth only about half what major website say.

Miles too dear i'm afraid. In the pictures it looks rough as a badger's backside.
Even minted out it's brain (without the dent and the bumper needing painted) it's never worth £1100, it's £650-700 in it's current condition.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Explain what makes it 'miles to dear' numerous sites say it worth 1400-1500 in a private sale, ive knocked off double what it would cost to repair the damage.Even minted out it's brain (without the dent and the bumper needing painted) it's never worth £1100, it's £650-700 in it's current condition.

Whats a good oil colour?. The oil has either been changed as per VW guidelines or it hasn't, don't want to give buyers the impression that you change the oil based on good or bad colour.
Also may want to leave out the bit about no signs of headgasket going. It leaves me wondering "has it gone in the past for him to know the signs?" No need for you to put such costly issues in their heads.

Your first mistake was believing what What Car and Parkers say as gospel. Reality is a whole difference kettle of ball games and more often than not, folks selling their old cars expecting those sort of figures invariably will be disappointed.. Yeah but ....It's a VW and a Golf so must be worth a fortune .... err ... no.What car and Parkers say >>>

I know that his Top Gear tallness, VBH and Quentin W. and most of the other Clarkson wannabees go on about these ordinary cars but, that's all they are .... ordinary production cars. Follow the various advices already on this thread and get your car looking its best and you may get a reasonable price for it ~ but it wont be a What Cat/Parkers guideline unless you're lucky enough to find someone looking for an old Golf who believes the Gospel according to those publications and who thinks the likes of Clarkson et al always know what they're talking about.
Anyway, good luck ... we all can do with that from time to time, especially when selling an old car.... it's your first time ... pay attention to what folks on this thread have said and learn so that your next car sale will be so much better.

And what bodyshop is going to fix that damage for 170? Sorry, but no.
there the quotes ive been getting. and the people they are from do reputable work. they are only small independant garages, but if people with aston martins and other high class cars are trusting them, i think i can trust them with my golf.Thom
