Hi all

Test drove a 335d M Sport saloon today (auto with paddles) and liked it very much but ideally wanted a 335i petrol. However, having seen the trip computer on the diesel showing 28.8mpg (6k miles on the clock) and was told to expect 10mpg less than the derv burner.

Can anyone give me any real world mpg figes for either or both cars?

thanks

My 535d averages around 32mpg with a mix of town work and motorway commutes. I can get around 39mpg on long cruises.

I'd expect similar, maybe a fraction more from the 335d.

All depends on the type of driving you're likely to do!

From personal experience I'd say you'll only get near the combined mpg for a diesel if you're doing mainly long motorway-type runs and in that scenario there might be a 10mpg difference between a 335d and a 335i. However, in more mixed conditions I'd be surprised if the difference was that much; if there's not much round town stuff involved I usually beat the combined figure for a petrol by around 10% whereas in a diesel I'm about 10% down. Applying that to the latest 335's you'd be looking at 34 for the petrol against about 38 for the diesel (so about cost neutral given the higher cost of derv but the diesel still has a longer range if that matters to you).

Both excellent cars, you pay your money and take your choice!

I have a dms chipped 335d coupe and test drove the 335i as well before deciding - my reasons for buying the 335d was the fuel consumption in the end. After 18 months of ownership I average about 32 mpg (not hanging around) but on a long run it turns up to high 30's - 39.7 on the last tank. Agree that after taking into account price difference between diesel and petrol and the extra price? of the 335d that there won't be much in it.

I had a 535d and the 335i, both tourings and I got 26mpg from both.

The 335d is lighter though and I got 30mpg from that over the 2 days I had it.

I could also get 33mpg from the 335i on a run doing silly speeds, the 335d would return around 36mpg doing the same.

So around 10-15% in it really, so costs about the same to fuel.

Diesel is a better buy new as it holds its money better, but then if buying a year or more old the 335i works out cheaper for the same reason.

Just buy the one you prefer driving I say.

Thanks all. Having read some other posts and having owned a 325i M sport i may actually start looking for a well spec'd 330i M sport coupe. Not sure the 335i running costs and initial purchase price are worth it for my usage and fairly high mailage (i do 15k miles a year +).

I have been looking for a Cayman S (i know totally different car) but am getting my ear bent to get 4+ seats and the bmw is the only other car i really like/want.
