I'm convinced the fuel economy of my A4 is getting worse. My car is a 56 plate A4 Avant with the 170bhp 2.0 Tdi.

Used to average 36mpg , but recently this has dropped to 34mpg over the last 8000miles. Car now has 50K miles on the clock & I've had it from new. Journeys are all yorkshire B roads / country lane stuff, anything from a minimum of 12 miles to 250 miles / day.

My 120d BMW on same journeys / same driving style is averaging 42mpg ( calculated )

What's everyone else getting out of this engine ?

Would be useful to know as it's booked into the dealers next week to be looked at.

I just had a manual avant for a week and managed to average 34mpg over that period, I did 1000 miles in that week as well, first 2 days was round town and shortish journeys and it was 28mpg!!

I was really disappointed with the economy, I get 24.5mpg from our 3.2 Q A6 tipronic avant combined and 32/34mpg from that on a run, so it is actually cheaper to fuel than the 4 pot diesel with current prices.

so similar to what I'm getting then. Maybe I'm expecting too much from this VAG diesel ?

Me too on the disappointed front, 07 plate, 57500 miles in less than two years, nearly all on the motorway at a normal cruising speed. Sometimes scrape up to 38mpg, both my PD130 Passats, 02 and 53 plates, 45 mpg minimum and the '02 one did that hardly ever seing the motorway, and regardless of how they were driven. Long motorway trips made at least 50mpg. Economy the most disappointing thing on the car.

I get better than that from an A6 3.0tdi tiptronic quattro, it does 40-42mpg on a motrway run and combined is almost 35mpg. I havent worked out whether thats cheaper than the petrol version. Apparently I am not particularly light with the right foot (according to Pirelli)

You should be getting that from the 2.0T petrol, seems a little suspect to me?

Perhaps do a brim to brim check, your computer might be wrong?

I have an A4 Saloon s-line 2007 42k miles, boot with golf clubs, laptop and the odd box of paper work.

From a full tank (65 litres - just over 14 gallons ??) I get an average of 600 miles.

Just under 42MPG. I do a mixture of b road and motorway miles sometimes spirited.

I have had more with an empty boot approx +40miles but also less approx -50miles when doing shorter journeys on a non working week.

Your stats seem well down *edit* just noticed the majority is non motorway mileage that doesn't sound too bad then, you would expect with more gear changes and on off the gas you'll be using more fuel*edit*. What mileage do you get to a tank ?

turned out the fuel pump was knackered ... seals allowing oil contamination or something. Anyway, twin pump rebuilt etc & on the return journey I managed an extra 5pmg over 20 miles without even trying . 40mpg here we come smile

is this the PD or the CR engine ??

FWIW wifes Octy VRS with the 170 pd engine returns 42-44 mpg on the daily commute ,I got 48mpg out of it fully loaded on a decent trip in France but this is all off the computer apparently VAG ones are about 3mph optimistic
