shame that, i guess it's not a million miles off. There are some online retailers that had them at £125 plus postage!

so, did they do another release or something, or did they just hold some back?
Pretty sure that's the case. For example, Bowmore Devil Cask ll, which came out in September and literally flew off the shelves everywhere. Shop in Edinburgh was selling them again, so must have got their nuts on extra bottles. There's only 540 bottles which came to the UK. So I assume this is the case with the Ardbeg's.

The price change has been silly with them. They went up to £250+ and are now back down to £130 in auctions it seems. Hopefully means more people buy them to drink now.

Anybody interested in one of my Talisker 1985 (27yo Diago Special release). I'll be putting it in auction just after Christmas otherwise.
Is that one a cask strength release or one of those bottled at the same strength as the standard 10yr old?

I'd echo that sentiment. Unfortunately, like wine , far too much of the very best whisky is never drunk , ending up as a purely investment vehicle and/or a "look what I've got" willy waving exercice.

The 56.1% one (https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-22042.aspx).

I must admit, I've got a few recent Ardbeg bottles (Some Aligators, then Day, Ardbog and Auverdes)and they're generally decent, but surely they're now being sold as collectors items it means that's exactly what they won't be?

As the prices slowly climb and the number of bottles made seems to grow, is it worth hanging onto them? I'm starting to think that drinking them might be the way to go.

I have a Coryvrecken open, so after a couple of those I may think that's a great idea! smile
if it's limited release and isn't absolute dogst then it will generally appreciate.

Put it in my case to take home, dropped my case. Now I have no whisky, but my car does smell like a distillery. frown

Damm this costly thread! Sounds more up my street for an ardbeg with less peat, so the debate of two or one, I settled with one bottle and sent it to my home address not to be tempted to crack it straight open.

Unlike the Highland Park Einar I started after a drunken Christmas party turned into nightcaps, damm nice drop too.

I need a bit of advice please ?
I need to buy a bottle for the father in law . . apparently he's fond of peated, smoky whiskies - not too much peat and smoke but got to be there far more than the Speysides I'm keen on.
Anybody recommend something about £60ish or so which is peated and smoky ? I'm guessing that's probably enough to get something quite nice ?
Cheers !
Give Caol Ila 12 a go. Peaty and smoky but not as strident as the Lagavulin (my main dram of choice) The Caol Ila is in most Waitrose.

Other than that, a Bowmore may fill the bill, Tempest if you can get it, have never tried the 12, but perhaps worth looking into.
Thanks, I've already bought the Lagavulin ! It looks like a quality whisky so should be OK.

It darn well is I'll have you know! Anyone who disparages it should be keel hauled !! biggrin

Lets hope he likes it, its one of those whiskies thats never forgotten, and for many (self included) its the dram that starts people on the whisky trail.

Good luck

Thanks, he said he likes peated whisky so should be well received. I prefer Spayside whiskies, no peat at all like Glengoyne 21 and 25, The Balveine, Glendronach, Glenfarclas etc but it will be interesting to taste and quality peated whisky. Might change my mind smile

I'm guessing they held some back. It is quite annoying to be honest as the Ardbeg Day bottlings should be limitied IMO. Having said that, it was quite tastey. Should I get another bottle scratchchin

Drinking a lovely whisky this evening from the English Whisky Co. Chapter 7 Rum Cask. I'm just about to have my 3rd dram as it is very nice.

Has anyone managed to get their hands on the new Diagio releases? Port Ellen is 2,200 this time around yikes but they do have a 21yo Rosebank and a Caol Isla 30 yo that look interesting.

Not this year. I did get a Convalmore 1977 36 year old last year, but there's nothing burning for me!

you know something bottled in 1977 isn't necessarily an 'age' equal to the length of time between bottling and now? Sorry if that's patronising...

I picked up a Strathisla 12 year old for £17 in Tesco yesterday, I'm normally an Islands man, but it's very good & well worth it at that price.

Just about to send a mail. Thinking around £400, although I'm not sure if you can find it for cheaper so might be worth checking. The usual couple of places I checked seemed to be around £500.

I suspect he knows, hehe It is a 36yo:

Opened Laphroaig QC the other day, first time I've had it and it's a nice drink. Same goes for the Springbank 10yo, although it was better to let it breathe for a bit beforehand.

I'm half way through mine and wasn't immediately happy with it. Compared to most other whiskies I've bought (Spayside, sherried) it tasted quite bland and weak but over a period of a few weeks, making sure I hadn't coloured my palette with stronger flavours, I began to appreciate it and it's probably one of the most balanced whiskies I have. There are lots of different tastes in there but not one that overpowers the rest, it's quite remarkable and definitely a great whisky. It's delicate and subtle but it's all there. I paid £125 for it so £99 is a real bargain. I'll get myself another at that price smile
