Hi there,

Yes anything under £40 is great value. My cost price is £41.90 inc VAT and we buy it 20/30 cases at a time.

Auriverdes pride of place, getting opened tonight. Another newbie is the Diplomatico 12 year old Venezuelan rum, which is also getting a tasting shortly.

it's open! Well, it isn't the usual Ardbeg, but in a good way. Very silky smooth, balanced, not quite such a heady hit of peat and smoke which are usually present in fistfuls in an Ardbeg, but still some peat. Sweet, very long in the mouth. If you're put off by 'ashtray' then you need to try this, but it's not 'Islay for the rest of us', i'd say it's a very good, rounded dram. Like it a lot, they deliver yet again! This could disappear very quickly indeed!

It would also appear that mine is open.... Unfortunately it wasn't me that opened it and there's cork too in it!

Crap, can you send it back and get it changed? frown

Was in The Grill in Aberdeen tonight and have to say they have a great range of whisky! Ended up going for the Arran Devil's Cask II, and have to say it was very nice. Any recommendations in duty free for when I head back?

Bought a Tun 1509 Balvenie to sit with the 1401 batches...bloody lovely whisky that falls into the "save for a special occasion" category that never seems to come!

I love the whisky from Japan. Currently have Nikka from the Barrel and Hibiki 12 and Nikka Taketsuru 17 Year Old on the go. Once these have gone Ill be getting some Hibiki 17. Ive tasted this at my local pub and its lovely stuff. You should be able to get a 70cl bottle for about 85£. Hibiki 12 comes in 50 and 70 cl.

Too delicate for me. It totally suits its market, however. I said the same thing to a mate recently who asked the same question, but he rightly figured that might suit him v well and he loves it so I am sure it's just me!

When the times right (that I grow some nuts) I'll send you a sample of a bottle I've got tucked away. This is the notes of the bottle & its mindbogglingly amazing, I m just to scared to open it because I will not last more than a day!

NOTES - The Panel found deep notes of sherry trifle, black coffee and dark chocolate with cherry. Also, spicy fruits of the forest, Vimto, sweet, earthy beetroot, and imperial stout with raspberry. “So rich!” exclaimed one Panellist. “So sweet!” said another. Water brought ginger preserve, malt loaf, raspberry concentrate, chocolate prunes and Fisherman’s Friends to the fore. There were chocolate limes to taste, along with pink Chewits (strawberry), pear shisha, Dr Pepper and a quality new leather note. Very moreish, we all agreed and were left with Blackjacks, lemon tea and ginger coated with dark chocolate as a fond reminder.

I'm a big fan of Japanese whisky, but it took me a little time to really tune into it.

The Hibiki 17 is a good place to start. Don't expect big, punchy flavours though. If you're used to great wallops of peat or sherry then you may be initially disappointed. Give it time though, and get used to picking out more subtle characteristics and you'll start to appreciate it more.

One big thing I keep coming back to is balance. I haven't tried the Hanyu or Kuriazawa, but tried a number of Suntory and Nikka bottlings. In those, nothing is too sweet, too peated (if at all), and so on. There's obviously differences between distilleries; Yamazaki tends to be more vegetably/aniseed, while Hakushu is softer, more malty/Malteasery. Both of these are blended into the Hibiki blend, but for me it's definitely a case of the sum being more than the parts.

I tried the Yamazaki and Hakushu peated varities (at a restuarant, coincidentally, called Hibiki. No suprises for guessing what the bar was full of....) and while the Yamazaki took the peat well, the Hakushu not so much...

One thing to keep in mind too, the 12 year old Hibiki is finished in plum liquer casks, which the older ones are not. It does add a unique finish to the whisky, but does make it rather different than the others. Not a bad thing, but something to be aware of if you like (or don't like!) the 17 and find the 12 a bit of a suprise!

Wow maybe I generalised then! I have tried Yamazaki and hibiki. Cheers smile

I love the Yamazaki 12 and Nikka from the barrel. Keep meaning to try more Japanese Whisky.

It does seem like a very different beast to Scottish Whisky but very enjoyable.

I also picked up some Corn whisky to taste, Very interesting but too rough around the edges to become a regular in my cabinet.
