i have to buy a car for my brother.. he has a mk4 Golf S Auto and after a bit of research ive suggested the above

soemthing like this seem to be smart and teh right spec:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLK...

he does NOT need anything powerful. certainly not a GTI, just a regualr small family car that is comfortable and well built

couple of questions though if anyone can help... is the Diesel 170bhp a good engine to go for ? Is the 'GT sport' still comfy and not too harsh or cart-like (he wont want that !). And finally, is DSG an auto box ? I have heard that its very good with quick changes but wans't sure if its a paddle system or something you can just leave in "D" (which is what he will want).

the only other final complication is we could get him a brand new MK6 golf but i dont have any idea how long delivery would be and if they are much better than the mk5 ?

thanks

Don't know about Golfs but DSG can certainly be driven in 'D' as a conventional auto, there is no need to use the paddle shift if you don't want to.

The 170 brake engine is powerful, imo the 140 is more than adequate and will be more economical and have lower insurance, and then of course the 105 brake won't be too bad either. I'm currently looking at these cars and enjoyed my drive in a 140bhp (a GT Sport) and it's no slouch. The 105 felt a bit too soft, but the 140 was really nicely damped and a big improvement on Golfs of the past.

the GT sport looks a lot better in black imo. the dsg is like any other auto if left in 'd'.

thanks a lot chaps

the 140 sounds absolutely more than adequate for my bro

i'm not sure he's ever driven anything with more than about 100bhp

its kinda strange, he's like a millionaire many many times over but has only ever driven basic spec VW Golfs frown

some people just don't get cars I guess

Rest assured - the GT Sport is still "comfy".
Mine's one of the last MkVs with free leather seats. Irons out bumps and poor road surfaces pretty well.
I went for the 140bhp version - 170bhp would be good but I'm still wary of DPF problems.

I was in a Golf GT yestuday (17" alloys and sports suspension) and it seemed a bit on the firm side to me. I ran a 105 SE for a couple of years with 15" alloys with standard suspension, and it deffinetely handled the bumps a lot better.

I think he might be better of with a new shape MK6 2.0 TDI 140 SE DSG. It would have the CR engine as apposed to PD, so a lot quieter and more refined with a very smooth power curve. They are far more comfy and upmarket inside with a better ride. I think delivery time is currently up to 3 months, but well worth the wait IMO.

Edited to add more info.
