Im looking at an S5 as a possible for my next car. Seems like theres some good deals to be had on secondhand low mileage ones.

Just interested to know how much (if any) discount its reasonable to expect off the audi approved listings? Just want to get a better handle on what i can get for my money.

As always with any used example it's going to depend on the specific circumstances of that model and the type of deal you are after. You'll always get the best deal if you have no part exchange as it's a quick and easy one for the dealer - unless your p/x is particularly desirable to them. For an Audi dealer that will mean an Audi with less than 60k miles on the clock I believe as they don't tend to sell anything over that, plus probably something they can move on quickly.

Take a look at the dealers general stock levels as that might give you an idea how keen they will be to move it on. If they have three sitting there all similarly spec'd and priced, chances are you could be looking at a few thousand off if we're talking about a £30k+ car. Despite the credit crunch, it's a little difficult to gauge in some ways as many dealers seem to have low stock levels at present. I'm in the market for a high spec'd A6 Avant at the moment but finding one seems to be very hard at good money. Just missed a private sale about a month back that was good spec, mileage and price and haven't found anything to vaguely compare to it in the last month. The newer (1-2 year old) cars at dealers don't seem to be attractively priced enough when compared to what you can get off a brand new car - someone on here mentioned recently that they got 25% off list on a new A6 Avant which sounds exceptional - not sure you'd get something like that on a new S5 but a quick look at some of the internet brokers suggest £4k off the basic car alone. Of course with the new plate just coming in there ought to be lots more second hand ones coming onto the market, but with new car sales down so much that seems to be slowing as well and some (general) dealers are suggesting that they are now paying more for good stock as it's thin on the ground.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on if you do haggle a deal. Best advice I can give you is to find two cars at two different dealers (that aren't in the same ownership group ideally) either of which you would be happy to buy, then pit them against each other for the best price.

One other tactic that can help sometimes on second hand cars is taking the wife/girlfriend/partner along. I know of one car manufacturer that used to teach it's sales staff that you talk money with the man and colour with the woman. Not sure they still do this, but my wife has the deadpan poker face "I'm really not sure about the colour" drill down perfectly when it comes to putting the final squeeze on the deal :-)
