ok,

The mrs and I need to decide where to go for her 21st in Sept, we have talked about a lot of places and finally settled on a shortlist of Thailand, Phillipines or the Maldives. Now the Mrs predominantlty wants to do the whole beach, sun, sand and sea thing, whereas I would actually like to have some other things to do/sights to see etc..... so I am leaning towards Thailand, but seeing as i know very little about any of the above, I was hoping the PH massiv would share its vast collective experience(good and bad) of the above holiday destinations. where should we go,where should we stay, anything we should absolutly do while we are out there....etc etc...

cheers folks!! :-)

Maldives is pretty much all beach, sun, sand and sea, great if you're into diving, but not if you want a bit of sightseeing as well.

I lived in Thailand for two years, and the Philippines for nine. I don't think I've been to the Maldives.

For a holiday I would recommend Thailand personally. They have a far better tourist infrastructure than the Philippines does, is less chaotic, but a bit more expensive.

You never see package tours to the Philippines advertised anywhere, and that is for a good reason. biggrin

Ive a place in Thailand.
Try Cha am, its an up and coming resort that the Thais holiday at.
www.asiatravel.com are pretty good for hotels. Its 5 miles up coast from Hui Hin which I have never been too but know people who go back yearly. You should try both.
A taxi from BKK is about 2500 baht.
I am not keen on Bangkok, its ok to see, but I wouldnt stay too long there.
If your with the Mrs avoid Pattaya its great for single blokes, Bars everywhere. I know couples who go, but more than a couple of days and it does your head in.

I have had some great holidays on Boracay in the Philippines one of the best beaches I have ever been too.
But I have also had good holidays in Thailand as well.
If your a seasoned traveller try the Philippines if your more package holiday person go with Thailand.

The least obvious choice is the Philippines but it has so much more to offer than the Maldives. . We spent a week at Lagen Island in El Nido,Palawan. Read these reviews, it really is that good........

Absolute bks

Some superb beaches on the island of Cebu, friendly locals, great food, recommend it for a sun/sea/beach type thing. Didn't get shot at or beheaded or knived once.

Thailand would be my favourite though

I've been to the Maldives twice, and it's superb!

As mentioned, it's excellent for diving, but my parents loved only snorkelling!
Also, there isn't much to do when it gets dark.
After dinner, I alot of time in the bar with my brother and had many early nights.

I've not visited the other two destinations, so I'm unable to comment!
