Weird start on MK5 Golf

Just tried starting my golf fsi, it kind of started half way and kept trying to turn over but i tried to put the accelerator on but it didnt work. then my brother told me press the accelerator before starting it then it came to life. now it just starts up normally. is that normal? why did it happen?
