Auction Report: BMW & Mercedes Mega-Sale 12 March 09

Well, have I got a big one for you guys today?!

A monster sale - over 900 cars - could only result in a monster report. And below are over 300 results from two manufacturer groups - BMW/MINI and Mercedes Benz/Smart - giving the most comprehensive insight into current trade pricing across these brands.

The trade price guides are still absolutely useless (you have to wonder what they're playing at, three months into the year), so these snapshots really do offer the best guide to what dealers are having to pay/are prepared to pay for good quality stock. Hopefully they'll be useful to you too; whether you're buying or selling.

And the cars in today's BMW/MINI sale really were in top condition - absolutely ready-to-retail and many with their AUC checks completed.

BMW X3 models showed the highest demand over what are little more than notional CAP prices, especially those with the later range of diesel engines (sd) which all fetched well over £3k over book.

For anyone thinking of buying a MINI, be warned: your choice of colour will play a major part of your car's future value. Biggest 'no-nos' are 'Mellow Yellow' and 'Oxygen Blue' - the latter ensuring that the car wearing it sold for £1800 below book. Don't think for a moment that your friendly local dealer will reflect that in the price of the car on his lot; he'll tell you how 'cool' and 'funky' you'll look and how having an unusual colour will set you apart from the usual suspects. But pop back with same car in a couple of years and you'll have your pants pulled down by a salesman heaving into a MINI-branded sick bag.

Both BMW and Merc sales achieved a 100% conversion rate, so the auctioneers were the biggest winners of the day.

I think they were quite keen that these weekly revelations stayed away from the BMW sale as I was denied a catalogue for that part of today's proceedings. Where there's a will though.....

So given BMW's snootiness - is there anyone on here who would ever in any way feel sorry for BMW dealers? - it's probably worth repeating a scurrilous rumour I heard. It is alleged, that BMW dealers who purchased at today's sale and who go on to sell the vehicles through the BMW-branded AUC, will receive rebates on their auction hammer prices of between £400 and £1000 from BMW UK. Thereby ensuring that they had a head-start over any independent dealers trying to buy themselves stock. Many dealers, from home traders to car-supermarket buyers, went home completely empty-handed today.

These reports have never been intended for any kind of malicious use, but I'm a big fan of auctions being a level playing field and I'm not sure I saw one today.

Perhaps it was from the Mercedes personalisation scheme the name of which I cannot recall. Like BMW individual but for Mercs. Obviously.

ETA: "Designo" - in which case a rarer beast than a standard one.

Sounds like it was Obsidian black. Great colour. Remember seeing an E55 in that colour and it looks awesome under flourescent lights.

Have just looked at an MB colour chart; it may have been 'periclase green metallic'.

I have (trade) CAP Clean at £23,450.

But either way someone paid a lot of money for it.

I'll keep an eye on AUC for it.

That is absolutely shocking. The only possible reason for this is to manipulate the guides, otherwise they could easily sell direct to their own network, and save all the transportation and auction house fees, (like Renault do).

I guess if the guides are 'bumped up', it will ease the negative equity some people are suffering when trying to trade in, and therefore kick start new car sales.

But if the retail customer won't pay the higher asking prices compared to the guide values, and the finance houses won't finance over book values, how are they going to shift them if they've paid £3k into book?

There are clever minds than mine at work here, or is this why some of the biggest dalers are going to the wall?
