Does anyone know what is regarded to need planning permission?
I'm thinking of building a small brick, basically shed type thing in my front garden to put my motorbike in, nothing too big, a bit larger than a motorbike.
as it would be classed as a permanant structure, would it need planning permission as its that small?

Quite a lot depends on your neighbours and your council. Someone I knew built a huge brick garage with no PP at all, and the council turned a blind eye. On the other hand, we've all heard the horror stories of people being made to pull their house down because they painted their window frames the wrong shade of white.
You will get away with a shed-type structure, classified as garden shed. Brick structure probably a different matter as they'll sure as hell want to snare some "building regs" profit from you, and when I last went into this it was £500 for a site visit for the foundations... If it's just for the bike, go for timber, mate!

as for making it wood. I was thinking about that, but then thought against it, as It can be easy broken into.

Ring and ask about putting a shed up. Should be a simple yes/no answer. Don't mention bricks at this stage- they'll just tell you to submit a planning app at £200+. If they say no to a timber shed, they're 99.9% certain to chuck out anything else. If they turn you down though, ask why - might be as simple as "no sheds in front of houses". Then you can ask the obvious. Worth a shot. Good luck, councillers are fickle creatures at the best of times, and they're desperate to claw money at the mo.as for making it wood. Depends if you have a protective Rottie in residence I guess... Sorry, get kind of blase' about that one! Would be a major prob, but I did state "Removable", and I meant "on paper...."! This loop works for people who want to put shelters in fields for their horses... In reality, the shelters don't move! CAN be moved however, if council get arssey... Good luck! good idea though

The basic rules are that you need planning UNLESS:
- the structure is more than 5 metres from your house, AND
- it is not between your house and the road, AND
- it is less than 4 metres (pitched roof) or 3 metres (flat root) high
Rule of thumb - shed in back garden = OK, garage on driveway = needs planning.
In any case - talk to your local office and get the real facts!
