hi Guys if anyone could please help......Since loading a free copy of Nemo - kids disk my computer has gone from bad to worse.......
I am running windows 98 second edition which i have just reinstalled to try and cure the problems. Outlook will no longer open and the whole system runs 50% slower than it used to. The screen clarity has really deteriated. I tried the graphics card site for drivers but they don't seem to have any.ASL Rage Pro.
I am really temted to start again by reformating the hard drive although i dont know how, can some one tell me how to please? Also would it be better to buy an upgrade disk to XP thinking that would overwrite any problems etc as i have loads of pics and emails that i want to save but as usual i cant copy them with nero cos it dosent work.
Thanks for any advice
Ian

Wiping the HD and re-installing windows does usually fix most things. However, you do need to be able to reinstall the drivers for everything and be able to back up any files and such like before formatting.

Going to XP is a good idea, but only if you PC is fast enough. Personally I would not install it on anything less than 1GHz CPU and 256Mb of RAM. It will still work on a slower machine, but will be very slow.

One of the big advantages of XP would be that it will 'probably' have the drivers for most of you things already in it and will 'probably' recognise then and get them working without too much hassle. It is also, of course. the most recent windows and thus will be able to cope with most things.

For backing up stuff, writing to a CD is useful, but if your Nero does not work then thats out! Depending on how much stuff you have to back up, a USB key is another simple option (assumming your PC has USB). USB keys are ever cheaper and you can one of all different sizes. If you cant fit everything onto one USB key, then you could put stuff onto it bit at a time and then 'deposit' the data on a work or friends PC until you have yours sorted.

If you choose to install XP, it is very easy to to. Either you load into windows 98, put the CD in and go from there (it prompts you through it quite simply) or if you cant load into windows, then you can get the PC to boot from the XP CD - to do this you need to change a setting in the bios - not as scary as it sounds - i fyou dont know how, post again and someone will explain how to.

If your PC is not really powerful enough for XP or you don't want to buy it, then wiping and reinstalling 98 from fresh would be a good idea, but its more of a pain to do than XP. Again, post again if this it the route you choose to go down.

You say in your other post that the icons are now tiny..

could it be that your runnin a higher resolution than you used to, and thats why they are tiny (and its soo slow? )

Right click desktop... properties...settings.... drag the slider for screen resolution down a bit... and hit apply.

Wow!
EEIN, a very informative and usefull reply, thanks for taking the time to write so much. Also Jamie thanks, i have fiddled around with those settings but the one im on is the only one that fills the whole screen.
Xp sounds like a good idea although i don't think i have enough power. Maybe i should go for an upgrade, thanks once again guys
