My wife is pregnant with our first, and about half way along so my Z4 days are numbered. I really enjoy driving it so it will be sorely missed, but in the current climate it doesn't make financial sense for me to keep it along with a 4-door baby-seat-friendly car.

I'm looking for suggestions for such a baby-friendly car but one which is fun to drive. A 4 or 5 door will do, it needn't be an estate nor even a BMW (heavens forbid). What do you guys think?

I posted something similar on another forum but want to get as many opinions as possible. Thanks!

E46 or E90/91 325 or 330 M Sport saloon or touring, in petrol or diesel, spring to mind depending on your budget.

Thanks. I'd go for a saloon over the touring and budget is around 11 or 12k as I don't want to spend much more than the Z4.

I've been looking at the 3 series. On first impressions the E46 looks a little dated to me but people seem to rave about it - overall is it much better than the E90 (performance and modernity considered)?

I'm not sure wat I think of the E90 either - my main problem is I like the look of the E92 which makes the E90 look more box like. I'll see if they grow on me whilst I continue my search.

How comparable are the diesels and petrols?

Focus 2.0 pertol or Mondeo 2.0 diesel, both best in class.

Wait a few years and then get something serious again driving

There are plenty of very nice four / five seat fun cars out there - this is pistonheads after all...

A3 Sportback with Sport spec, pref a 2.0Tdi or 2.0T petrol (05-56 plate). Should be able to find one with sub 40k miles for under £12k.

Jules.

How about an Alfa 159 Sportwagon?
Don't know if they're 'fun to drive' but nothing else looks more beautiful in that class.

Like...?

I'm looking into an A3 sportback quattro or 3 series (both 4+ doors). Considered a 1-series and an Alfa but the wife is dead against their looks.

Keep the ideas coming please.

Golf GTI/R32, Focus ST, Mondeo ST 220, Vectra VXR, Leon Cupra R(I think you get a five door version), Skoda Octavia VRS, the list goes on.

Seriously though.. If you enjoy the BMW driving experience (I know I do!) then why not another BMW? 1 & 3 series are great drives. Not so nice to look at like a Z4 mind, but a good steer, dependable and perfectly practical too. How about a 130i? I think I would if I were in your shoes.

130i is the answer. Don't worry about your wife, she'll have other things to think about soon.

Hello! I recognise you from the Z4 Forum.

I'll make a few suggestions for you. I know most of my suggestions will get slated, but I'm just opening the options up to you.

BMW 1/3/5/6/7 Series
Astra VXR (Purely as they can be picked up cheap. I just sold my 58 plate for £13k!)
Or, if you need 5 doors, you can pick up an Astra 2.0T/1.6T dirt cheap. Try to get the exterior pack
Alfa 159
Mazda RX8
Porsche 911 (Well, it has 4 seats!)
Audi TT (Again, has 4 seats, though it'd be crap compared to your Z4)
