Im in the process of selling a car at the moment and have just received an email asking me for:

vin\chassis number
current mileage
v5 serial number
v5 reg issue date

I thought the only thing needed to carry out an HPI check was the cars registration?

Could this be someone trying to clone my vehicle!?!!?

You need the registration number. That is all.

Reg and VIN number for HPI check is standard, V5 issue and serial number are optional, but recommended to check the V5 isn't a stolen one.

Just gone through this myself - selling and buying. So no, your buyer isn't trying it on, he's just doing a thorough check.

When I did a HPI check with the RAC there was some sort of guarantee for about £10,000 I believe I might be wrong and in order to qualify you need to provide the information that the person has asked you. So from his end I think he is just covering his back in case the car turns out to be stolen, finance, accident damaged etc.

You only need the registration number to do the check, but the rest of the information is needed to activate the guarantee that RAC provide with the check, just in case the HPI check was incorrect.

Hope this helps.

That info is needed if you want to check MOT status and whether the V5 is kosher on the free gov't websites.

Legit IMHO.

Just be wary if he asks for your inside leg measurement.

I posted a similar thread a few days ago.

It turned out that with the info he asked for he could a) get a guarantee on the HPI check and, more impressively b) see ALL of your old MOTs online, including failures and advisories!

I'll certainly be asking in the future, as the MOTs seemed really useful before making a journey to see a car.

as with the above posts i would say the would be buyer is trying to cover himself for all scenarios including cloning which is becoming more popular especially for expensive German motors. The VIN is needed for that.

Its a situation though where the buyer is trying to cover himself but so is the seller. I have been to look at cars where dealers dont leave me alone with the V5 and insist on holding it for me to see.

Very useful - thanks. thumbup

Needs the V5 Doc Ref Number, which isn't the same as the V5 Serial No. Fortunately have both and makes interesting reading.

Having just bought a car, I didn't do the HPI thing until I was at the point of making an offer for it - so if you are at or past that stage - then I so no reason to refuse.
Bloke I bought mine from scanned the logbook in and emailed it over to me - no bother.

That MOT site is interesting.

My car has passed its MOT every year bar one where it failed due to an insecure CV joint.

Also a gap in history between an August and January though !
