I have recently bought a 93 4.o and put it through a 48000 service. Have recently noticed rev limiter at 5100...am I going mad...my diesel peugeot does more than that!! According to the Bible 5600 is more likely

It may be worth getting your rev counter checked. Mine certainly under reads by a margin (15% ish). If you have an oportunity use a strob and check the counter at say 3000,4000 & 5000 revs.

I didn't think they *had* a rev limiter. I've never noticed one on my '97 450. And I've revved that to 6K on occasion.

Mine comes in about 6,000rpm (97 Griff) - though I think you get max power/torque around 5-5,500 so seems pointless going over that.

'Tis not the same car/engine/ECU mapping as the 4.x

My '98 450 certainly does ... a couple of 'oops' moments in second have caught me out though i was looking at the road at the time and don't actually know where the limiter kicks in.
AIUI it does vary between cars a bit (really? no surprise there!) and also some rev counters are quite inaccurate so this adds to the confusion.

think some are a bit slow to respond - might be ok in the higher gears.

Yep, they certainly do have a rev-limiter, but it could well be set way too low.....

I have recently had my 4.0L chipped by Mark Adams and tuned on the rolling road. .... Mark said the Standard Landrover chip was strangling the engine above 5,000 rpm and that it was real screamer and wanted to go. So unusually he moved the rev limit up to 6,700, remapped it and it absolutely flies. Peak power come in at 5,655 and power and torque hang on well past 6,000 ....

I was there and it made an awesome change to tvrred's chim

the bible kept refering to 4.x I thought it was a printing error were does 4.x come from? what does it mean?

It's a shorthand way of lumping together the 4.0, 4.3 and 4.5 engines...

...similarly Win9x is used to imply either Windows 95 or Windows 98.

it sounds like mine is a bit on the low side assuming the rev counter is accurate, but is the limiter only down to the ECU or can anything else effect it ?

Just the ECU. But some problems will cause a high RPM misfire that feels just like the rev limiter cutting in. Weak spark, inadequate fuel supply, worn cam can all show up under full throttle at the top of the rev range.

I think I will resign myself to the fact the rev counter is inaccurate !! Have just replaced Ht leads, plug extenders as they were riddled with arc marks and nice crusty oxidised film !!!!
