Hi all, went on a long trip today (95 miles each way), was really pleased at the mpg I got firstly, £20 of V-Power got me 197 miles which is amazing considering I wasnt eco-driving on the motorway and there was quite a bit of town driving involved also.
But on my way back the 'check oil level' light came on, which is nothing unusual to me now, it seems to require 1 litre of oil every 200 miles or so. I don't know how much oil a normal car is supposed to drink but this seems way too high to me. Is something wrong with the car? It is an FSI by the way (explains the V-Power lol).

i have read a few stories of the 2.0 TFSI engine using a lot of oil especially during the running in period but what you describe sounds excessive.

IIRC the manual says it can use upto 1 litre of oil every 1,000 or so miles but i would say that was worst case scenario.

Hi CupraBob, mine is only a 1.4 FSI and its well past its running in period. I'd be really pleased if it was every 1000 miles but the Castrol GTX is not cheap and yesterday it came on whilst I was on the motorway which was worrying. Will reset the trip computer to see how long this litre last. What could be the problem though?

VW's "acceptable" limit is 1 Litre of Oil every 1000 Kilometers which is roughly 640 miles - how old is the vehicle? The warranty is 3 years or 60K. If it falls within this limit get a VW dealer to carry out a controled oil check for you - even out of warrnaty if the vehicles got a full service history there may be some goodwill.

Nope unfortunately the car is no longer under warranty (its a 2004). It does however have a full VW service history. Could my driving style cause it to consume a lot of oil? How much does a controlled oil check cost?

Well I was work as a service advisor at a vw dealer and we don't charge any money to carry out a controlled oil check - it is a simple as topping oil up to the maximum level and taking note of the mileage and entering it on to the vw computer system and once the customer has covered 640 miles the oil level is checked again and this data is sent to vw for them to make a decision on any warranty or goodwill payments.

that sounds way excessive,I had a Mk5 TDI few years ago and that oil burner only used a litre every 4000 - 5000 miles or so.

A litre every 200 miles?! Assuming black smoke isnt billowing out the exhaust, Id say it was leaking, remove your undertray and have a poke about

thanks for all your help so far, no it's not leaking underneath (not that I've checked, assuming I would see oil on the driveway). It was never really an issue when I first bought it back in June, after I had the service and oil change it seems to have increased its consumption. Not 100% sure though, it's not billowing black smoke or anything, but I'm definetly recording how long this litre will last, so far 5 milessmile.

Cor, if you ask me an "acceptable" limit of a litre every 1k is unacceptable on a modern engine.

Could it be the wrong grade of oil being used.

No no, I use Castrol GTX 5W-30 like I've been advised by halfords and VW. It says its for modern VW and Audi engines, and something to do with FSI cleaning. So I'm 99% sure its the right oil.

Errr, are you sure? GTX is mineral oil. You want Edge 5w-30 A3/B3 IIRC

That's certainly the right oil. It's a mystery then.

Best idea, as others have said, is to get it checked at the dealer
