Hi,

I have a 2002 R400 Race car which was converted to a C400 in 2006, since then I have stopped racing it in the Caterham championship, I want to put it on the road, has anyone done this before or know how much I have to do or what it will cost?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Has it ever been SVA'd? If not the hassle factor is certainly somewhat higher!

Assuming it hasn't are you happy with a Q plate?

Not a major issue to get it tested but it will cost (£500 plus now I think) and you will need to fit headlights, indicators and repeaters, fog lamp and reversing light. If you fit a windscreen then you'll need the heated one to meet demisting requirements and wipers/washers. not sure what the SVA view on aeroscreens is.

You need to make sure that there is nothing on the dash or in the cabin with "sharp edges". For SVA purposes toggle switches or the fire extinguisher pull handle are sharp edges so have to be removed or placed behind the steering wheel.

All external edges of things like lights, mudguards and nuts and bolts need to be covered (Caterham sell all the bits).

Overall, best talk to Caterham and they will tell you what you need.

You'd be better off selling it and buying a road car IMHO

However if you do want to register that one, look carfully at the new SVA rules

If it did previously have a registration you don't have to have headlights or a screen, you can get an MOT without

I'm not sure if you can go this route through SVA I'd guess not, but more reading required with new (this Month) rules

Don't know much about the 2002 race chassis, but what does it do for the handbrake position? Is it under the dash and does it need to be in the centre for SVA (or whatever the new thing is called)? You probably have to mess around with that horrible handbrake caliper arrangement as well if you have the big rear race calipers.

I just bought an r300 race car and inquired about getting it v5'd before I bought it. Basically the loom is the biggest issue or so it was explained to me as it doesn't have any of the wiring bits for lights, brakes etc. I was advised to sell it (when the time came) and buy another one.

Why would this be the case? I would expect a Caterham race car to have a certificate of newness similar to an ordinary road kits, and if all parts were new (or just one refurbished part), it would carry a prefix per the age of the certificate.

WRT the OP question, I was interested in a very well spec'd track car that CC were selling and when I made enquiries about making it road legal, the general opinion from them was why bother and it wasn't worth the hassle and cost. I appreciate this might be slightly different though if you have had your car from new or for quite a while and know the full history of it rather than unravelling "features" as you go through...

Cost wise, CC suggested a figure of around £3k to make a car road legal but did say it could be done quite a bit cheaper if 2nd hand parts were used and this was to put it in full road trim (weather equipment, lights, heater, carpets etc.)with a significant expense being the loom as mentioned above. so I suppose its anything from £1-3k - and expect quite a lot of hassle from the SVA process too!

Just about to SVA my Westfield Aero race.
Similar thing to a Caterham racer, had to add lights, make new loom, etc, etc. SVA test is on 27th......let you know how it goes. Some 2nd handparts etc, cost was under 800 I would guess. Test is ~200.
