Hi all.

I need to place some things into storage for a while, and i am looking locally at some solutions.

Has anyone used Self Storage companies before? Anything to look for?

Thinking of using a company called U Hold The Key,based around the north east area, any dealings with them?

I've used safestore (they're nationwide), they were not the cheapest but they gave me the best overall impression that they were very professional and secure.

The units were secure, you bring your own padlock, CCTV, some areas of the warehouse were 24hr keycode access so if you don't need that you can have your 'unit' in an area that locks down at night when staff go home. They provided trolleys, and had huge cargo lifts to get from floor to floor. They can arrange additional insurance for you to cover your items whilst in storage with them but my home insurer (L&G) was happy to transfer my contents insurance to the unit as it's a secure setup, worth checking out as it may be cheaper.

I'd recommend them smile

Sounds good. I used to work in Self Storage in London for nearly 14 years (until the boredom just got too much hehe)
Not much to add other than Safestore have been around longer than many and are well established with a good reputation.
Just double check the insurance cover you get (either with storage company or with your own insurer wink )...or not!
The main risks will be flooding, mice and fire. Theft is very unlikely as someone has to target your unit...and by that they will have know what's in it.
If you are late paying your bill you will have your access restricted pretty sharpish. Some companies charge on a 4 week basis, some monthly. Most charge VAT, some don't (my old company didn't).
Avoid 'Self Storage' that involves a 20' container in a wet field - the money you save in storage fees will be lost in wet goods wink

If you want any more info, ask me here as I don't check my 'spammy' PM email address very often hehe
