Hi there, just wondering if anyone partakes in any sort of martial arts in southampton. I have never done it before but fancy taking it up as a hobby and hopefully meet some decent chaps along the way. Anyone recommend a place to go etc?

It's not Southampton, but up until recently I practiced Ninjutsu in Southsea, at Warrior Crafts. It's friendly, good for all levels, and practical as well. Plus totally knackering which has to be a good sign.

I've not been for a few months as I've been broke but plan on starting again next month. I'd highly recommend it. It's a mixture of armed and unarmed, with a bit of submission stuff thrown in too.

theres plenty out there but really depends on what your after. There are so many different style to suit all abilities. Do you want to be doing it as a bit of fun and keep fit, or do you want to study the finer points of the arts?
I studied and taught Pak Mei Kung Fu for years, now knows as Mo Han Do, check out http://www.mohando.com/ for more info. Its a short fist style so there is no flowery kicks etc so you dont need to be a gymnast to start it. They do move on to weapon when you reach the higher levels, but its not the best style for that.
Depending on where you are in Southampton and dependant on wether you mind a drive, check out http://www.masterangelo.co.uk/ He is an absoloute star! He focus`s more on the Philpino styles now, and I have trained with him for a long time now and can quite catagorically say he is the best Martial arts instructor I have ever come across (and I`ve seen and worked with a lot!) Fantastic Martial Arts, great tuition. He works on weapons like sticks and knives, with every technique working with empty hand too, so no learning different techniques for different weapons! There are plenty of videos on his site to check out, and he also sells instuctional DVDs so you can get an idea (or train at home too) if you like the look of it. Highly recommended!
For keek fit and non contact competitions try http://www.gkrkarate.com/locations/locations.asp More a sport orientated Karate but good fun and very sociable. Lots of clubs in southampton and surrounding area.
Hope that helps

I trained for about 10 years with the SEKU (Shotokan of England karate union). They have some really good sensei who trained with some of the established Jap masters in the 60's and 70's. They are based around pompey and the surrounding areas and have a very good club which trains in the Fleming park leisure centre in Eastleigh on a Monday and Wednesday night. They cater for all standards from novice beginners right up to 6th Dan.

Hi chaps, sorry for the loooong gap since posting this thread, basically I have done a bit of research on various styles (wikipedia/youtube videos etc) to see what sort of style I fancy.

My favourite is Wing Chun Kung Fu, is this a fun style to learn? The other one that interests me is jujitsu but only because it look "cool"

Can anyone recommend a good club in southampton area that teaches Wing Chun?

Cheers.

Leave the Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu is the one to go for. I did MMA for 3 years, which has a lot of no gi grappling.
If you want to do fancy kicks and strikes on punch bags whilst practicing your favourite Bruce Lee wails great, but it would never work in a fight. Totally redundant in the real world.

Jiu Jitsu - as Im sure you have researched, will work. The only way to train is with someone else, not someone stood in front of you with some focus pads. It may look 'cool' but it is also seriously cardio intensive, but technique will slowly allow you not to have to rely on it so much.

I can agree totally with what you have said there really. I believe Aikido is similar to jujitsu in it's moves but from what I can grasp from what I have read the defender does the moves in way to neutralise the attacker without injuring them. Do you have any experience of Aikido? Quick search on the internet and I found www.southamptonaikido.co.uk

Do you know any places that are good to learn jujitsu?
