Hi Guys!

When driving about 75-80mph, or overtaking from about 40-65, if I stay on the power long enough, the temp gauge starts going up, to around 110 Deg, as soon as this happened, I slowed down to about 60mph, where the temp gauge goes back down to 90, and sits happily, as it does when in traffic etc.

The car is a Golf GTI 180 1.8T with 44k on the clock. although its not had its cambelt/ water pump done yet, could this be the problem, the water pump isnt pumping the water round quick enough?

Thanks for your help in advance!

What year is the car? Timing belts perish with both age and miles.

It may be poor circulation of coolant due to low coolant level, unclean coolant hoses, fins breaking off of the water pump, corroded Radiator or it could be a dodgy thermostat.

Eitherway though, I would strongly consider having your cambelt, tensioners and waterpump changed. smile

Car is a 53 plate, I know the Cambelt etc needs doing about now too... which is why I have just had it booked in to be changed on Thursday.
Will also make sure the water pump is changed for one with metal fins.
Just wondering if anything else would cause the car's temp to go up?

Have you checked your coolant level recently?

Believe it or not, the faster you go without stressing the engine, the cooler your car should get if you have a front mounted radiator.

Coolant levels are fine, Checked it twice now, and still the same.

I realise that the engine should become cooler when going faster, which is why I was surprised when the engine cooled when I slowed down.

Fingers crossed the problem is the water pump!
