I am going to buy my first caterham, I have up to £20k to spend!
The car will be used on the road with one track day a year if that....!!!
Would a 1.6 138bhp superlight do the job or would a 1.8 160bhp superlight R be better??

Thanks

I would think the R would be the best performance in a straight line! but I/ve got a 138bhp Supersport,6sp,widetrack,on CR500's and through the twistys its awesome, if you've not been in Caterham before I think You would be suprised at how quick 138bhp goes!!
Test drive both and then make Your choice!

Good luck on find a 7

I think you will find the SLR more like 190 than 160BHP.

With 20 grand at your disposal you could look for a good 1.8 Superlight and keep the remainder of the cash to upgrade the engine later when you get use to the power.

In the olde worlde of K series caterhams, my 1600 supersport was best fun for me for road and track. Many people disagree, but you need to drive them and choose what you like best.

160bhp might be the "supersport R" upgrade that caterham did with the cast-off R500 bits?

At that budget you should porobably have R300, R400 and R500 (maybe just) in reach.

Why not build a kit? I did, huge fun & a real sense of achivement. You'll get a very nice Sigma powered CKD kit for 20k,great engine!
