Nick, get yourself on www.briskoda.net
What the guys on there don't know about Skodas probably isn't worth knowing!
There's a dedicated sub-forum on there for the Mk.1 Octy.
I can't really help much as mine is a Mk.2

What age
What Mileage
What Spec
Generally well built cars, based on the Golf/A3 platform. The 4x4 is the dark horse, comes with 150 bhp but a simple remap gives 220 ish & combined with the 4WD makes it a real winner, I carried on modding mine & ended up with 356 bhp. The L&K is the luxuary one. I Had 2 Octy 1's at one point & still have the Diesel. Both were ragged to death & I had very few mechanical failures, the Diesel is now on 137000 & still going strong, the 1.8t I sold at 85000 & I started modding it at 8000, completed 3 cannonballs & a few other runs in it + many track days. An incredibly strong car that took no end of abuse & just came back for more
Check the air con works, especially important on higher mileage cars, the clutch on the end of the compressor has a habit of slowly working loose & eventually falling off normally trashing the thread as it goes & totalling the compressor, its common on all vag cars of that era. Repair at a main dealer is over £1000. If you buy one get the nut checked & Loktite it or lock washer it. DONT be tempted to hammer the thread to burr it over as you can damage the seal in the compressor
The Octy 1 is certainly a far better car than the current model
