I want to get a set of plates for my personal Reg, but I want the spacings to be other than what places like Halfords are willing to do. Where in the Fareham area could I get these done?

Cheers

Peter

Easiest to go on-line

try www.fancyplates.com

You need to go into the 'fancyplates design section but can opt out of all the add ons so you end up with UK plates with different spacing.

You will get them in a couple of days and can space as you want.

Thanks, is there a way to get individual numbers closer together? i.e. first 3 digits are 'B12' I would like the 1 and the 2 slightly closer to kind of make an 'E'.

Also what are the old bill like on these types of plates? Do they turn a blind eye? What can they do? Fine? Points? How far can you push it without getting stopped all the time?

Cheers

If you use an online site like craigs plates, they will do you 'show plates'. They state that you shouldnt use them on the road but obviously people do.

As far as the law goes, it all depends on which officer stops you. Some traffic officers love stopping people for it, where as most city cops have better things to worry about. I think as long as you have the correct text style you should be ok, e.g no dodgy unreadable italics.

The worse you will get is a £30 ticket, and it is not an endorsable offence. They say that if you get stopped they will send a letter to the DVLA and if they do this twice the DVLA can take the plate back. YOu will get a Q plate as a replacement. I think this is more rumour than fact though.

One other thing to consider is ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). If you have your car nicked, it is less likely you will get it back. The police use these cameras to locate and recover a lot of stolen cars, so if the cameras cant read your plate they will be less likely to find it. just a though.

The BiB are getting rather pissy about this sort of thing as far as I'm aware, my friend has been caught twice for having plates illegally spaced. Fine and produce the vehicle at an MOT station to prove the plate has changed, I think if he gets caught again he will lose his plate.

as Matt said and as seen on interceptors etc recently, it seems spacing is just about the biggest factor the cops look out for after of course fonts that are so far from normal eg italics (like the J Reaper said! wink

previously used

...but their last 2 plates have been inconsistent to the first i asked for so waiting to see if i'll the latest cock-up will be corrected . . .

Fancy plates gets my vote, and they will adjust the spacing however you wish.

I thought that misrepresenting the gigits was the most serious offence.

Mobile ANPR cameras will ring up an alert if it cannot read the plate. This clearly attracts attention from the plod piloting said car.
Given that so many more systems are relying on ANPR tech, my money is on the fact that number plate offences will soon become an endorsible offence.

I got pulled over for spacing and was just given 7 days to have the plates changed and take it to an mot centre. No letters or numbers were made to look different and had standard styling. If I still have the email at work about the changes to the law I will forward it on.

I know it has been a while but it took ages to find the email. As it turns out there is not too much info in it but thought i'd post it anyway. The email is older than I remember too.

Limited time left to purchase your Showplates

You may have seen in the press that from 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to sell or manufacture registration plates that do not conform to the latest British Standards and design criteria laid down by the DVLA.

Consequently the ability to purchase Showplates displaying non-legal fonts/spacing/images/slogans etc will be outlawed.

As a result, My Showplates can only supply Showplates until 30th October 2008.

With this date looming and Christmas fast approaching we wanted to give you as much notice as possible to enable you to place your orders and avoid any disappointment. Here is a direct link to our website:

We appreciate and thank you for your past support.

Fancy plates is in Ireland I think, so they can still do it. Could be wrong though...
