When we went to California I bought the cheapest tomtom One I could get (about £65 refurb) and then downloaded the maps for £30 from tomtom.

beware the new tomtom ones dont have excess capacity nor a SD card slot to take extra maps...so buy a european model and remove the european maps to replace with the US.

Or a Tomtom 920 (not on sale now, but still avaliable) 930 or 940 will have the maps preloaded, good units too, but a bit pricy

Garmin...they do a US flash memory card for the US and it is a pretty good addition to a very usable system.

I use this as a portable unit, it's pre-loaded with all Europe inc. UK & North America

Garmin 770

It's not waterproof but should be ok in a tank bag running on its internal battery, can be handheld if you like, use it in your car, no annoying flip-up antennae either.
Also does traffic reports when in it's dedicated cradle.
Otherwise get a Garmin Zumo which is built for a bike and waterproof

I've been looking at the 775t which has the us and europe maps, although other than the maps and a wide screen im really struggling with the differences on the garmin stuff..

i did look at the zumo but its too bulky, i prefer the idea of a tank bag based one

I used my NAVI 310 with an SD card with US maps, I purchased from the States, works well, used it 4-5 times, no problems, the card has about 6,000,000 points of interest too, must are useful

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 205w from Best Buy in the US and then bought the full European maps on an SD card.
Complete sat-nav solution for little money.

Really impressed with the 775t here in florida so far :-)

Im using it on a bike in a tank bag when back in the uk and had a little play before i left.. Aim using it on the bike i wanted the wide screen so that limited the choice a bit..
