Golf Mk5 battery question

Well sometimes the car doesnt spring to life immediately (1 in 20 starts i'd say). It just ticks over and the revs rise a bit then go back down and on the second try it struggles up and idles normally.
My initial thought is the battery, its still the original battery from manufacture judging by the numbers on it, something like 1K0....which I think are VW part numbers (means the battery is 5 years old!)
So when do they need changing? Shall I get someone to test the batterys remaining power? Cars going into a specialist on Wednsday anyway for other problems which may or may not be related to this problem
