407 ARX - Genuine ex-works Mini Cooper pictured in 1964 when it was my dad's daily drive to work and competition car at the weekend!
407ARX, first registered March 1962, 7th o/a on '62 RAC, 6th o/a on 63 Monte Carlo - with Paddy Hopkirk, and was eventually sold to Peter Riley. One of the original 997cc works mini coopers.austin said:
HQB, your geekery is outstanding, even more so on this site than the "other place".
Ah! Hello Austin! You see you never know when a geek may appear! Maybe this is the equivalent of "Off Piste" forum following for "us"! Don't tell the others! If you REALLY want to meet a geek, try a bus enthusiast website..their depth of knowledge is literally frightening!rallyspit said:

...and it still exists - anyone know where? Museum or historic racing (I hope)! Also - is the other mini RS2345 an early example of a personalised number plate? RS xxxx was issued by Aberdeen from 1904-1928. If so, it's dissappeared again - not on carcheck database.
407 ARX only exists as a works recreation IMO. A stripped bodyshell (which did not have some very obvious modifications that the original shell had when in my dad's ownership) appeared on Top Gear wearing registration number 407 ARX. Viewers were able to vote using a premium rate phone number for the car they wanted restored from a shortlist of special cars with important history.
If you look at the Top Gear episode http://www.streetfire.net/video/top-gear-season-5-... (segment 5), they say that the owner has the [407 ARX] bodyshell and "boxes of bits from the cooper racing era" ie not 407 ARX bits per-se.
The BBC tried to get the car authentified but couldn't, as its well known that the car had been broken for spares and all the workd bits sold off.
As a result, having won the premium rate phone-in they paid for the car to be 'restored' but never featured the car afterwards.
I did see it advertised at the end of last year/begining of this year for £100k and started a thread asking what people thought would be the difference in value of a 'genuine works car' as opposed to a 'recreation wearing a works number plate'. I never knew if it sold or not and if it did, what it went for.
With regard to RS2345, that was my mum's car and i've no idea what happened to it. I assume like 407 ARX it was broken/scrapped when it got old and worn out but unlike 407 ARX there was no 'benefit' in someone 'finding' it!

Not sure how old or how "classic" the vehicle has to be to qualify, but I can offer a few oldies...

My Holbay Hunter GLS shortly after I acquired it in 1982
same car in 1984 in my first race in the then new Road Saloon series...track is Cadwell Park

That Holbay Hunter is fantastic.
This shell wasn't quite so fantastic, although the engine and drivetrain was...It lasted 2 seasons...at the end of the 85 season I had a small "off" into a gravel trap at Brands and subsequently noticed that there was a suspicious crack around the front bulkhead seam...Jacking the car up behind the bulkhead meant the front drooped and enlarged the crack to a size where I could get a 10p coin in the gap...I ended up reshelling the car for the 86 season into another Holbay shell...In fact I bought a whole complete Holbay Hunter from another Road Saloon competitor (who had a car sales business) for £200...
The interior was "rottwieller spec" but otherwise the car was in fair condition...ended up selling it in early 87...
The idea was to move to the BMW car club championship and I had a deal lined up to buy a 2002 Turbo replica (that was the 02 class winner in 87), but that fell through...However, the seller was Alex Elliot who had also raced the car in the road saloons...He then built me a top spec N/A M10 motor pushing out a reliable 198bhp for cost of parts only...This was put into a very lightwight 02 shell with some Alpina running gear...with me on board and a tank of fuel (small alloy racing tank) it clocked 725Kg...
Ran this from 89-95. Unfortunately I suffered brake failure at Snetterton on the last lap of a race (dicing for 6th IIRC) and ran into the back of another car...
It was repaired and then campaigned intermittantly for a while by a friend, but his brother in law had a major off at Goodwood on a trackday and stuffed the same o/s front corner even worse than before...this rendered the shell scrap, but many parts (including the motor) are still running today...
